Hence the question what chances do you see for options to fit 21” wheels upfront? Could the car be run on a square 295/35/21 set of tires?

The overall diameter and circumference of the front (285/40-20) and rear (295/35/21) tires is virtually identical (less than 0.5% difference to keep xDrive happy) so there's no issue running the rear size all around with regard to the drivetrain. However, we haven't yet tested one of the rear wheels on the front to confirm clearance when turning or the inner clearance to the upright with the slightly wider wheel.
Since the wheels are the same offset and only 1/2" wider out back, that means they'll only lessen inner upright clearance and outer fender clearance by 1/4" vs the OE front 20x10.5's. Considering the 12mm front spacer is wider than 1/4", the fender clearance isn't an issue, so we'd just need to check strut-side clearance and liner clearance when turning.
