I'm sure that the California Duster has the potential to add micro-scratches, especially if used often and aggressively. Used carefully, I'd assume less so. I'd also assume that anything that makes contact with the car's surface can cause scratching. Even microfiber on a clean surface. Optimally, never touching the paint at all is the best solution, though unrealistic.
In theory, on a properly sealed paint job, the sealant should act as a sacrificial layer/barrier. It also occurs to me to wonder what is the purpose of expensive ceramic coatings (or even ordinary sealants) if they do not even protect against a car duster. Kinda undermines the whole narrative, doesn't it?
