And it's right on for the most part. They certainly went through a period of time where their cars weren't on par with the Japanese in a lot of ways, but over the last 5 years they've closed the gap, and the very latest models are near top of class, especially in value.

GM got caught in a bad position by the credit crunch (which wasn't their fault), and then hit hard again by the rapid decline in auto sales. All the automakers are hurting right now, but GM was too weak to withstand the downturn.

As you said, Ford got lucky. They took out a massive line of credit before things got bad. GM didn't need it as much at the time, and passed, but it's screwing them now.
