Question BMW 118i F20 Lci (B38) VANOS Issues

Hello!

I am just wondering if anyone else have ever experienced the same issue as i'm having now, Got a 1 Series from a well known auctioneer in the U.K, put a bit of work into it with Low Pressure Fuel Pump, etc, Been driving fine.

However, the last few weeks it keeps dipping into Limp Mode and giving me the Classic "Drive-Train Error, Drive Moderately", I've scanned it and it's throwing the following codes;

- 130204 (VANOS Solenoid valve, exhaust, activation) Line disconnection.

- 120408 (Charging pressure control).

- 130304 (VANOS, exhaust). Control fault, camshaft stuck.

Although it's throwing up these codes, which I have cleared and they have returned several times, When they do come up and the car goes into Limp mode, I pull over, restart the engine and the engine light disappears and it drives completely fine.

New to BMW's and Cars in general, Anyone else experienced this, would like to fix it myself if possible.

Many Thanks!
Sean.

Plug the error codes -- I used 130204 -- into a google search. The search provided 4 hits on YT videos that deal with addressing this error.

To be thorough search 120408 and 130304 too. View all videos then maybe you would have an good idea of what's wrong and what to do about it.

As an aside my 2002 Boxster after a trouble free 30 mile drive to the office when I pulled into the parking lot the engine idle was going up and down. Down to the point I thought the engine was going to die. And up to just over 1K RPMs. No CEL but I checked and there was a pending code which pointed to the VarioCam (variable intake valve timing) system.

The Porsche tech ended up replacing both the Varicam solenoid and actuator on the problem bank.
