Matrix lighting

BIMMERPOST

I understand that the G9x have hardware that supports matrix lighting. I read that NHTSA had approved the use of matrix lighting technology (in 2022) for cars import into the US. That said, do all the G9x M5 have full function of matrix lighting? I have a 2026, feels like its working but does not feel it’s as prominent as the Audi (wife has a Q7 that I paid someone to activate the matrix lighting). At night, i can tell the Audi lighting is working its magic. The M5 matix lighting seems to be less prominent (for the lack of a better term).

I don't think there is adaptive lighting at all (as on all other BMW i had with that feature). I think it's just adaptive high beam. Coming from lasers on G8x, it's a huge step down. The headlight doesn't "turn" with the steering anymore. I think it can turn High beam on individual lights to avoid blinding traffic but that's about it.

So high beams are indeed adaptive (anti dazzle headlights) and for NA market this feature is turned off.

It is VO decoded, so what you have to do is to remove 5AP and eithe wait for next software upgrade, or go to the dealer and complain about software glitches, they will reflash modules.

Done for both 2025 M5, and 2025 X7 and it is amazing.

So I tried a vendor “Bimmer-Remote.com” to do the no-dazzle activation. Their online reviews are good, price reasonable. They did this remotely in about 15 min. Unlike my audi guy (who charged more but covers future reactivation if it got wiped out due to software update), these guys charge a re-do 40% off. Interestingly, they didn’t have to remove 5AP, I can still see it in the vehicle equipment list from ISTA. They didn’t elaborate how they did it but it seems counter to most believe that coding out 5AP is a pre-requisite.

I coded out 5AP on my X5M a couple of weeks ago and just got a remote software update. Will see if it worked tonight, very hit or miss with the modules they update.

I apparently don’t know what matrix lighting does. What does this change? My wife has a 2025 X7 M60 and me a G99 - assuming this would help us?

Yes, it works and noticeable with a caveat. Because the car sits low, the angle of view is a bit limited, not easy to see the shades when there is a car in front of me or the oncoming car approaching. I do see the highbeam shines agian once the oncoming car passes.

Suggest that you google matrix headlights (Audi terminology) or anti-dazzle headlights (BMW terminology). watch some of the video clips and you will understand what wonders they do.

most cars now have auto high beam which is a primitive form of this lighting technology.

It's utter crap compared to the previous lasers, they don't move. High beam works individually but that about it...

On the plus side, there’s less moving parts to break
