Rim rash G99 M5

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My XM was rear ended and I currently have an M5 loaner while I wait on the repairs. The excess is extremely high if I damage the vehicle. And lucky me I've damaged the vehicle. The scratch is deep, even the tyre is missing a tiny piece.

I'm just wondering if those wheel repair stores can fix this? I don't need it perfect but I need it close enough that they'll just call it wheel rash and call it a day rather than try to claim insurance/justify claiming to fix the wheel.

I thought about just buying the wheel as that'll still probably be lower than the excess but it's actually really hard to get a hold of 1 in Australia.

Sorry that happened. Mine was worse and the wheels shop was able to fix it, they did a great job. Just look for a good shop. I do not believe that you need to buy a new wheel. I paid $200 USD. Good luck!

that's easily fixable and since the wheel is black matching the finish isn't a concern.

Did you get the m5 loaner from the dealership? Is that common in Australia to get m loaners?
I have never in the US gotten any loaner even close to an m. The best loaner I’ve ever gotten was an a8. Otherwise it’s a5, q7, evoques, 3 series, etc.

Thanks for chiming in. Does make me feel better knowing it's doable. I've reached out for 3 quotes. So i'll see which one I go with.

No. The dealerships don't fix things in Australia. It's all through smash repairs but the vehicle was given to me by these companies that offer loaner vehicles if you are not at fault. They chase the at fault party for payment.

Even then it's rare to get M loaners. I lucked out and they just so happened to have it in stock at the exact time I handed my car in for repair.

That will be easy for any reputable company to fix

XM has always been a strange like or hate car how you finding it?

Luckily for me I actually liked the look of the XM when it came out. So that was already a tick. We got a great price so it came in under the price of an X5M.

As for the car itself, no regrets at all. It's punchy, softer riding than the M5, and the electric battery gets me to work and back and my fuel usage during those days is extremely low.

I will have to admit, hands down the M5 drives better than the XM. No competition. But I've already scraped that black rubber under the car, so ride height is starting to remind me why I went to SUV's in the first place.

On a related note to my fix. If someone could give me some insight. The first guy I contacted said he could not repair it as a mobile service, but then 2 other companies have given me a pretty decent price as a mobile service.

Should I steer clear of mobile services in fear of them doing a poor job? As a poor job would likely result in me having to pay for the repairs again via the car loaner company.

Thanks mate.

I got quotes from 5 mobile and 2 physical shops.

Mobile repairs:

2 won’t touch it

3 are willing to do it for around $200

Physical shops:

1 won’t do it

1 will do it for $400

I’m leaning towards the physical shop, even though it’s twice the cost. If the mobile repair ends up being noticeable, the loan company will likely charge me anyway and I’d end up paying twice.

Also the physical shop needs it for 3-5 days but the mobile one says they can do it in an hour. So I'm a little skeptical on the 1 hour time frame.

physical shop is needed. Mobile shops are good for light scuffs and spot fixes but yours might require them adding back material before they can smooth it back out and paint.

In uk this would be £60 for non reputable shop £150 for a reputable shop

With all due respect, those that say that is an easily fixable wheel are wrong. I've had many, many cars and unfortunately some have had curb rash.

A mobile shop absolutely cannot do the fix. A real shop must take the wheel off and machine the lip and other damaged areas and refinish everything. There needs to be enough wheel left to refinish it on the plane of the wheel. If that is the case, then it's fixable. If that is not the case most places will in fact refuse the work. $400 sounds like a reasonable price for that amount of work. I just now got a quote for much more minor curb rash and it was $285 total and they will have the car for one day.

I had one wheel fixed on my 2025 x5m competition twice and the third time they said there was not enough lip left so I needed to purchase a wheel. So I have been through this. And yes I'm very careful of the wheels but there is very little margin for air on the 818m wheels.

Finally even if the real shop re-machines the wheel and fixes it, close inspection and comparison of that wheel with the other wheels will be slightly off. In your case where you have a loaner car that is probably not an issue.

Good luck for a successful repair!
