Engine swap

Tried searching but couldn't find an exact situation I am researching....

Can the engine on a 1989 525i be swaped with a 1990 535i? The dying engine on the 535i is plain worn out.

M30 transmissions are not interchangeable with M50 transmissions. The bolts won't line up on the engine.
