Mac road warriors beware...

...Apple has killed PPTP connections from their updated operating systems. I updated to Sierra on my laptop and then wondered why my VPN connection to a company I work with was gone. Some quick research shows that Apple has squashed it.

I don't recall seeing this in the "What's New in macOS Sierra" or iOS pages. This is going to catch some folks by surprise, I think. I understand Apple's reasoning, but they should have left an "opt-in" option under advanced setting or something so folks who didn't know about this change aren't left out in the cold. Simply saying "Well, your company shouldn't be using PPTP" doesn't help much when the user has no control over which VPN protocol a company uses.

So if you use a VPN to connect to your home or office, check to see if it's PPTP based. If it is, you may want to hold off updating your MacBook or iPhone until the VPN you connnect to is updated to L2TP/IPsec.

Good catch. I had to double check as I use the built-in VPN client to get into my corporate network. Anybody in a pinch should still be able to do PPTP connections through a 3rd party VPN client like Junos Pulse or something of that nature... Either way, it would be extremely frustrating in a pinch.

Good catch. Thanks for the heads up.

Most IT depts don't. Small businesses or home users might still be using it.
