Yelled and cursed at by HR? If that truly happened I'd say your buddy is safe. He just needs to document the incident in writing to his boss and express how emotionally impacted he was by the whole ordeal. Document that shit....In.... writing...In a company-based e-mail to his boss...Now....

At a previous employer, we lost several employees in raw materials due to this exact reason. Those employees were left alone for 10 hour shifts basically to move dirt around.....and play some 5 on 1.

I personally caught one guy. Security caught another. The odd thing is, I never mentioned it to anyone as it embarrassed me. I wasn't trying to get the guy in trouble or anything. Apparently he did it often enough, that someone else caught him and mentioned it to HR.
