Stone Chip

On my 2 week old iX I got a stone chip on the front edge of the hood above the headlight before I got the PPF done. It's a cluster of 4 pin head size chips. I ordered the touch-up paint from BMW but i'm not sure if it will look worse after being touched up. Any thoughts on whether to try to fix it or just let it go? I will still probably do PPF so does that change anyone thoughts whether to touch-up or not?

Normally, PPF shops prefer is you give them the touchup paint for them to fix the chips. The filling needs to be smooth or it will show up in the PPF.

I think Dr. Colorchip matches better. If it really bugs you, apply touch up paint, but just remember the PPF will eventually get punctured and it'll bunch up. If your car is light color, it'll show up as little black dots lol. I have PPF all over my car and it's peppered lol.

Can you give us an update on the chip? Did you have your shop apply the touchup paint before putting on the PPF? If yes, how does it look?

I got the dr colorchip and applied it myself. The issue I知 having is that when I apply the blender it痴 removing the paint from the chip so that there痴 still a pit. It looks better than it did to start but I want to try to add another coat. I went on a trip and haven稚 had a chance to do that yet.

I attempted some touchup if you see the thread titled screw marks installing rear license plate and showed some photos of my job versus a professional. The auto body shop I brought it to did mine for free but the PPF installer that I brought my car to afterwards said they would have done it, as well. My recommendation, if you池e going to get PPF, is to have the installer do it or bring it to a auto body shop. They have all the right tools which is 90% of the battle. Good luck, I知 OCD as you値l see from the post so I feel your pain.

I tend to apply colour (color) and then add a couple of layers of clearcoat touch up until just proud of the original finish (all with a matchstick). I then use some very fine wet and dry on a block to flatten, then use some Farecla cutting polish on a DA polisher to polish the finish to a gloss. You then can’t tell. Hope that helps.

It works great, but you still need a well-matching touch-up paint.

You don’t need a kit for this, just the bits and the technique. Whilst this is an old video, it does show the technique pretty well.
