Exclamation Five things you should never to do to your car!

CNN recently had an article on their website outlining the 5 "worst" things you can do to your car, most of them are self explanatory but here they are:

The 5 things are:
1) Sunny day car washes
2) Pressure washing a modern car's engine
3) Overloading the alternator/charging system
4) Installing "universal fit" wheels
5) Towing an automatic-equipped car with the drive wheels down

Here's the article for explanations of each:

Dries too quick and leaves hard water and spots and possibly soap residue.

I washed mine a couple times in the sun, but I made sure to keep everything wet so evaporation did not take place.

+1, the best time to wash your car is "just after dawn -- and in the late afternoon, just as the sun is slipping past the horizon."

meh I'd rather wait a couple hours, or wash it with some sort of cloud cover, the less product I'm applying probably the better. . .

What? It's not a one time cost? Does this thing really work?

i think that whole sunny day car wash thing doesnt apply to me because my carwash uses de-ionized water, i think that makes a diiference right?

Sunny day car washes especially on a hot day can do damage to the paint. Think of it as a magnifying glass, the sun, and a piece of paper and you've got fire! I've done it before but I think for German cars, it's actually okay to wash your car on a sunny day. BMW paints are actually quite durable when compare to cheap water based paints on today's Japanese cars.
