It looks like the M5 will need the electric battery to be charged. Does that mean you have to take it to the gas station and then to the electric station?

No. You gas it as normal but plug it in whenever possible i.e. At home, at the office, at a the Mall etc.

There are several advantages to this:

1. You can leave & arrive at places silently
2. You can perform most daily commuting without heat cycling the V8 or using petrol
3. You have heaps of instant torque when driving hard.
4. If the battery is charged prior to starting a journey and you set your destination in the vehicle navigation system (and not WAZE) it triggers ‘Anticipation mode’: The vehicle uses available data (map etc) to figure out where the EV element can reduce burden on the ICE to reduce gas consumption along the journey to maximise journey efficiency.

This might seem unnecessary in the U.S but to those of us suffering punitive taxes & $10 gallons at the pumps, it’s brilliant.

5. The range shown on the dashboard is not equivalent to the total available battery energy: The vehicle holds a minimum charge to boost the ICE at any time so full power is available at any time.

It also has a facility to use the ICE to recharge the battery should you wish to keep the battery above a certain level after a long drive e.g. you want the car to be perfectly silent when you arrive to your home late -keep a bit of range tin the battery, switch to Electric as you newr home and the V8 goes to sleep and you silently park.

I agree. People are being ridiculous:

1. I bet the 3.5s is closer to 3 or even better when it’s eventually tested
2. I drive a 545e and PHEV is phenomenal tech. People are going to be very, pleasantly, surprised.
3. Absolutely, who is buying a new G90 to launch it to death and destroy their tyres? If that’s your goal: Buy an M2.
4. The ‘Paris Accord’, the Climate debate… rightly or wrongly… the powers that be have decided the World needs to emit less CO2. BMW have to toe the line too.

For Europeans like me getting murdered by vehicle & petrol taxation.

Last M5 was priced to death due to CO2 emissions… this one is $70,000 less in some Euro markets due to PHEV system. Americans buying $4 gallons probably won’t get this.

However, the global powers have decided that CO2 is causing undesirable heating of Earth and big manufacturers have to curb their emissions to be allowed to manufacture & sell products. The new M5 is attempting to keep everyone happy.

As a current driver of a BMW PHEV married to the B58 engine (545e), I think people will love this car.

Sad days.
Where is it written that the car lacks regenerative braking or battery maintenance off ICE?

So the idea is that you can plug it in to cover daily driving and not spend any fuel? (assuming that you are not pushing the car of course)
Yep. That’s it.
And this is key. It really matters in markets where fuel is really expensive.
You get to use it efficiently on the daily drive but have the power when you want to have fun.

No. Not at all.

The battery retains a buffer of energy after it has stopped powering the wheels for normal driving. In other words: when the range needle is at zero, there’s still power in the battery.

The ICE keeps it that way and keeps a minimum charge in it indefinitely.

Whenever the driver calls for WOT, the full stated vehicle horsepower is available.

So, no drops at all. All the power, all the time.

Then I guess econtrol mode can be used to faster charge the electric one as you drive for those Autobahn stretches where you can't do sustained high speeds.
I have a BMW 545e.

It works as advertised.

And the power is phenomenal …even with a weaker EV element and a smaller, B58 ICE.

I think this will be a great machine.

How long does it usually take for the US configurator to open after UK opens?

Thanks for getting back to me. I can see your perspective. We can leave the environment debate on battery impact vs co2 impact somewhere else, but it makes sense to me that you’d have significant personal economic upside to a PHEV.

Also, if I can be cute for a moment, thanks for using freedom units for the fuel economy measure above. Saves me from having to ask chatGPT to translate.

So I don't see it on the BMW UK site, nor the order guide my SM sent me today (in Canada) for the Highway Assistant option (that the i5 has).

Is this really not an option on this car? Why the heck would they leave that out.

Ah, 100% man. We all love cars here.

I agree with you on EV batteries… strip-mining in Chile or having child-labour dig Cobalt in awful conditions in Africa… huge issues.

I too am unsure whether CO2 is the villain it’s made out to be or whether global heating is a cyclical thing like the Ice Age was.

The facts are, I don’t know. But I do know this:

1. I dislike pollution and I do my bit to leave little or no impact on my environment

2. I cannot change EU laws.

***
The PHEV uses less battery than a full EV. It therefore pollutes less.
It also allows me to use clean electricity (wind / solar generated) to recharge the battery and bring the kids to school without any gas being consumed -less pollution.

As you say, the G90 offers huge personal upside for buyers like me in enabling us to buy due to the laws that would otherwise prevent it.

Lastly, I think folk will be pleasantly surprised by this. The electric portion of this car is great. I know as I already drive a 545e.

I'd go with DAYTONA VIOLET for certain out of these!
Amazing and unique and exotic color. However, I would not do all black interior. Too bland.

Now that the US price guide is available I'd think soon. And they are better than I was expecting.
