I've had knee, particularly the left one, problems from when I first smashed my knee up speed skating back in the late 70's.

I had my first reco on my left knee back when I was about 15 and was told to never play sport again. Did I listen, no way known!

Up until I was 40ish I was playing two games of football (Soccer) a week, Friday night and Saturday afternoons, and the pain what that bad that I couldn't walk on Saturday night.

A patellofemoral replacement to each knee when I was about 50 put an end to my sporting career.

Move to the last few years and I have had really bad pain in my left knee and was thinking it was arthritis and I would have to have a full replacement.

Went to see my Orthopaedic Surgeon and he said, from x-rays that my knee looked fine, good spacing and so on. Go and have an MRI he says. Have that done and there is a 13x8mm (the size of a jelly bean) cyst in my tibia! There are also many other cysts in the knee but that is typical of what I have.

Looks like I now have to get a full knee replacement after all!

Bugger and I'm not looking forward to it!

If it's a meniscal cyst, it can be drained in your doctor's office as it's only an accumulation of synovial fluid forming a pouch. But it can return if the tear is not dealt with. Something to talk about with your health provider.

It's not unfortunately. It's some other type and if they drain it it will come back he says.

My man started the conversation, after he read the report, with "I've never seen that before" which was very reassuring! He then proceeded
to call in one of his colleagues who was also stumped.

Is it located in the back of the joint? If so, it might be a popliteal or Baker's cysts.

Thanks for the pic. It looks like you're describing a Subchondral Bone Cyst. It's a fluid-filled sac that forms in one or both of the bones that make up a joint. They're especially common at the knee or hip.

One week from today, my wife will be getting a full knee replacement. She has been struggling with it for 5 years and various injections and other treatments stopped providing any relief so she has been in significant pain and has become quite inactive as a result. Doctors advised waiting as long as possible since she was in her early 50s when this started. But all agreed it is time now.

We are both nervous about the procedure (maybe me more than her) and know it will be a difficult and lengthy recovery period, but look forward to a time when she doesn’t have to live with this amount of pain.

It is a daunting procedure to look at, but they really have it down at this point. I worked on a rehab floor where we had 1-2 knee replacements in per week. Almost everyone was feeling better at discharge than they had been before the surgery, and with much more improvements over the subsequent rehab period. I would recommend doing inpatient rehab, or a similar level of intensity at home; this is very worthwhile for both speed and amount of recovery.

Thanks for that. Our neighbor and my uncle (both about 20 years older) had knee / partial knee replacements earlier this year. Both said the first month after surgery is bad pain-wise with sleepless nights, but after that she’ll be happy she got it done.

Can you expand a bit on what you mean by inpatient rehab? We have a pre-op appointment with the surgeon on Friday. The procedure is outpatient (done in surgical center and home same day as procedure barring any complications), walking with walker same day. Supposed to be significant pain within a few days of the procedure, light rehab at home initially and then rehab for a month at a facility located in the doctor’s office.

A few points in regard to joint replacements:

When to have them done?
- When the pain/discomfort progressively gets to a point in which it wakes you up at night, and/or it interferes with your quality of life.

Whom to have it done by?
- An Orthopedist, that is trained and specializes on that specific joint replacement; and does more of those in one week, than many other bone Doctors do in a month.
- A specialist that has a great success rate, track record, and positive patient reviews/outcomes.

This is coming from an ER Physician, who has had both shoulders replaced, with great success and improvement in quality of life. With the last one, I was back to work with no restrictions, 3 weeks to the date; of being in the operating table.

Neck Disk Replacement

Had a numb/tingling arm show up back in 2022. My Ortho told me it was a combo of my spine was slightly thicker than normal reducing the space between them and age degenerating my disk(s) in that area. Told me we could try a shot to manage it, or just fix it now. Since I was 52, never had surgery before, never broken a bone before, never stayed a single day in a hospital before and never even had a stich in my body - I tried the shot. Gave me some relief, but never went away. Moved to a stand up desk and that helped a lot, but it came back with a vengeance in Jan 2024 just like he told me it would. Day to day was not horrible, but sleeping was the main thing and I NEED sleep.

Finally pulled the trigger and man I wish I could go back 2 years and kick my own ass. Wheeled me into surgery at 9:27, my GF was driving me home by noon. By 3pm I was pushing a cart around a grocery store and at 8am the next morning I walked 4 miles on the local track. Total piece of cake. Went in thru the front and replaced C6/C7 and C7/T1 with titanium/ceramic. Withing 3 weeks I started back my full workout routine including squats and deadlifts and have not had any issues - although I started super light and worked my way up. Anyone considering it and (like me) can't believe it is as easy as your Ortho is telling you - it really is. 2 months later one of my people at work had the same thing done and had the same experience as I did.

I forgot to add.

My new knee comes from Zimmer Biomet and they use an Apple Watch based program to monitor progress through exercise and so on.

So, I get a "free" Apple watch, bonus!
