Rotation of Engine While in EV Mode

Ok, I am having trouble wrapping my brain around something. Maybe someone on here can help.

The electric motor is attached to the transmission on the input side of the transmission. We know this because the transmission still shifts when using EV only mode. So if the electric motor is spinning, the input shaft of the transmission must be spinning or there must be some sort mechanical disconnect.

I don’t think they could use something like a one way bearing/clutch or else engine braking with the gas engine or regen braking with the electric motor wouldn’t work. There will be some slip from the torque converter, but generally connected things have to rotate relative to one another.

I assume the gas engine is not rotating while in EV only mode, so does someone know how they mechanically disconnect the two??

It seems very inefficient, but I think it would actually be nice to rotate the gas motor when using EV only mode. Preconditioning could warm up the motor and rotating keeps things lubricated. Also, since the pistons are moving the cylinder walls would be kept clean. I am not sure what rotating with no combustion would do to the rings long term though.

Anyone have any idea how they get two motors to work independently, but while both using the same transmission?

Good question, I had a look on the ZF website, seems there's a wet clutch to decouple the ICE.

"The combustion engine and the electric motor work together effectively on the full-hybrid variant of the 8-speed automatic transmission. A separating clutch unit between the two power sources enables the combustion engine to be completely decoupled from the driveline, substantially reducing fuel consumption compared with the standard transmission. Vehicles with the full-hybrid transmission provide all-electric operation at various stages such as when moving off or over short distances."
