I received a mass email about a week ago saying to boycott all fuels except Sunoco,Conoco,and Hess, as these companies do not buy anything from Saudi Arabia. Of course, boycott Hugo's Citgo as well. Saudi Arabia is boycotting our products for years, and it's a good way to tell them to shove it. I'd like to see gas go down to $2 a gallon again and support our own country. I switched to Sunoco two fillups ago, and car(2004 Acura RSX-TypeS, 56,000mi.) performs better...Email said to spread info to as many people as you know, and EVERYONE on here seems way cool and can make a difference. I want to see America energy independent, and this is a HUGE first step....Go BMW and Go U.S.A.!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh boy. These things pop up in just about every forum I post on. So let's get one basic economic fact straight before people go crazy.

The side that holds boycott power in a demand-driven market is the supplier, not the consumer.

That's Free Market Economics 101. We don't even need to get into the fact that actually we have good political relations with more Middle Eastern nations than we have bad relations. Forget that Saudi Arabia is our ALLY, where we used to maintain military bases until we moved those forces into Iraq. We don't even need to discuss how it is the drop in the value of the dollar that has made the price of oil go up the most in the US, not greedy oil suppliers. None of that matters when it comes to boycotting Arab Oil.

Because all that matter is that the side that holds boycott power in a demand-driven market is the supplier, not the consumer.

This free market force cannot be turned around any more than you can turn the force of gravity around to make you fly.

I want to see America energy independent too. But instead of spreading spam/chainmail FTL, there are actual tangible things you can personally do to change your own personal role in making the oil market a demand-driven market. If the only change you make in your lifestyle is driving a little bit further to a different gas station than you usually use, the market basics actually get slightly worse, not better.

I do not boycott gas stations. My life is complex enough. Instead, I'll buy a 66mph CRZ and get triple the mileage I'm getting now.

If the price for gas went to $10 a gallon a lot of people would still drive an SUV or V8 truck. I expect $4 this summer. I will avoid the "alcohol" stations for as long as I can though. That is just stupid. We are burning food in our cars while people starve.

Look folks, the demand for oil/gas is inelastic. Economics 101 (Macro). So, let me remind everyone that there is new oil being discovered every day. Brazil just struck an eight billion barrel field that will go online in about 2020. So, the world is NOT running out of oil in any of our lifetimes. Technology will continue to improve and everything’s gonna be alright…

Right now, we are pinned by lazy consumers (us), a growing world economy and demand for oil, e.g., China, and some very wild speculation by the oil traders. Life is cyclical, it will come back down.

One last thought: the Ethanol stupidity that is driving up the price of food is also a guns-and-butter argument. Unfortunately, this one was foisted upon us not by the free market, but by the inept Congress of the US. Both sides of the aisle, mind you…
