Image Compression without reducing Image quality?

What are your favorite programs to re-size images for web pages? After posting my last picture thread, the pictures off the camera in normal size look great, reducing them down to 1024/768 size really kills the quality.

What can i do to retain a lot of the quality but make the pictures smaller?

you could try doing the resizing in photoshop/lightroom

in photoshop there is a "save for web" function, and if you choose bilinear sharper and keep quality setting for jpeg @ 100% no blur etc, the results usually come out fantastic

give it a whirl!
