There was an old giffer that did this once in a local parade of shops - she shot through a shop window. She was driving an automatic Volvo.
Never heard of this sort of thing on a manual car though.

My friend's old datsun wouldn't start once so we drove it the 1/2 mile back to his house with just the starter motor. Held the key cranking and left it in gear, and it moved the car. Engine never fired.

What in the name of...
Don't worry if you leave your cars in gear because a car would stall on the spot if left in first gear and then started, I'm trying to figure out what he did, but definitely was not an in-gear ignition, a car doesn't turn on if left in gear, the engine simply cannot fight the transmission and everything connected (tyres, weight of car etc) - you hear a "thud" noise and it just stalls on ignition. But in the video, the engine fires up completely... He may have started with the clutch down, and released it straight after ignition without realising the lever was in first gear, hence the chirp - and probably stomped on the gas instead of the brake - just a stipulation, but this one is a mystery as far as I'm concerned |

When I first started driving I was told to always park your car in gear, with the hand break on to prevent roll.

What happens if you start in D in an auto car? Does it take off?
I ask because there's no way a manual car would do that. Like someone mentioned, if the kid started it in gear without realizing and dropped the clutch, the car would have just jerked forward and stalled within a few inches. If he kept his foot in then the car wouldn't have moved. What he did was a perfect launch which meant he actually engaged 1st perfectly and kept his foot on gas. I think it was an automatic. |

that was classic.
classic, classic, classic. the kid's grounded. fer sure. I absolutely love the Mustang (it's got to be a GT or the Shelby...any lesser model is wimpy, imo..) and actullay met Jay Mays, big wig (prima donna) in charge of corporate design at Ford when I was in Detroit. I think what the kid found here in this video is what Ford'll call a "feature"...
