Your beloved radar detector is becoming useless!
There is a disturbing trend underway which could very well make ALL radar detectors so annoying to use, many will unplug them.
The culprit is these radar-based cruise control and blind spot systems! Where I live, it seems every high end car is equipped with them and they use K band radar, just like the cops. They are also low powered and narrow beam so they tend to not trigger the detector until you've moved into their beam and then they momentarily peg the meter. A pegged meter usually means going to max braking for me, now I coast and evaluate the situation. It's a shame the manufacturers didn't take this into consideration when they implemented these systems. Maybe they can be convinced to use a non-police radar band? |

Yeah...I think radar detectors where on their way out anyway. Isn't laser becoming more prevelant? Laser detectors mostly just tell you when you're about to get a ticket.
Maybe we need some sort of radar/laser jammer that skirts the FCC rules. |

The three times in my life I've been lasered, I've gotten away because I've been going too fast for the cop to get down from his hiding spot, into his car, and pull me over. K is crap. The wonderful state of Maine has installed K band radar drones on every electronic signboard in the state, but its no secret 90% of cops use Ka unless you're in the boonies.

There is now way to get around the FCC concerning radar jamming. Laser (904nm) is not under the FCC, its regulated by the FDA. Lidar jamming therefore is regulated at a State level.

you can get a whole radar jamming/police system installed for like 3k
but then it's really illegal lol cops use more Ka here and when Laser, I just go the other way, look behind me, and hope for the best but that's only when I'm speeding. otherwise, i try to be about speed limit level |

I dont believe any of these new radar based systems utilize (or will) the same frequency spectrum as police radar. So unless the radar detector is not very efficient at filtering there shouldnt be too much of an issue.
EDIT: There are some short range systems that operate in the K band. http://www.web2carz.com/257/knowledg...t-chicago-show However it looks like these most of these systems operate well above police radar. http://www.thefreelibrary.com/TRW+To......-a059702592 http://www.automotivedesignline.com/...leArticle=true http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...1/ai_53179685/ http://www.copradar.com/preview/xappA/xappA.html Those few that do operate in the K band seem to use a modulated signal ( http://www.adaptive-cruise-control.c...1200574784.pdf ) and/or sit in a very narrow band ( www.smartmicro.de/A_24GHz_ACC_Radar_Sensor.pdf ) that a good detector should be able to filter out. If not, it should mean a change to the firmware to selectively filter these out of alerts.

Yeah. Adaptive Cruise Control, Mercedes' radar cruise control, and Lexus' radar cruise control are slowly becoming mainstream
Radar detectors will become really annoying in some years time. |

you can't use laser in adverse weather conditions... radar will be around for a long time to come

Infinitis pulse their laser, so it will give a second on, a second off of laser. When the next "on" cycle comes on, I flash the manhattan pride symbol out my sunroof. (2 fingers down, 1 up, 2 down)

Just found this excerpt from the manual:
Laser False Alarms 1. Red neon, from stores and occasionally from brake lights of other cars (example: Chevy TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Olds Bravada and Buick Rainier), can imitate the characteristics of speed laser. Solution: Move away from source. 2. The electrical systems of some cars generate electromagnetic interferences, triggering laser alerts. How to test: Try V1 in a different car. Possible solution: Try relocating detector within the interfering car; also, your dealer may have a factory fix. 3. Adaptive cruise control systems using laser may cause laser alerts. Solution: Switch to normal cruise control. |
