Would you have helped him if he wasn't in a BMW? What if he was driving an old civic?

It wasn't a "mistake," it was a deliberate act that could have killed someone. Perhaps your actions encouraged him to "do it again"

Unfortunately, I've seen first hand what damage drunk driving can do and I have no sympathy with that driver and I believe that your actions - while well intended - were equally wrong. Your sympathy leads me to believe that you've been guilty of the same behavior.

Sorry - you're not getting any "atta boy" comments from me.

I agree with everything you've just said. However, Alpine3 did get the drunk guy home, preventing the idiot from doing any damage to other innocent drivers.

I never drink and drive (I never drink any alcohol, period), but a few friends of mine were killed by a drunk driver so that's basically the reason why I have a zero tolerance for such behaviour. Personally, I'd have called the cops myself in order to teach the idiot a lesson, and hopefully change his ways.

Still, thanks to Alpine3 nobody got hurt, so I think he still deserves some credit for his actions.

Agreed. Not a mistake. Props to poster for good intentions, but I would have called the cops as well, was just luck that he didn't end up crashing/hurting someone.

After dealing with countless incidents of this, one thing is inevitable. Getting that fool off the road was the most important part of the incident. Arrest may have a positive effect sometime in the future, but getting drunks off the road is the key here. cb1111's comment about Alpine3 sympathizing with the driver due to guilt by association is unjust. There are actually people out there that act out of compassion, and we don't know what his motivation was.

Alpine3 did what he thought was right, and who knows what could have happened if he had just called the cops and left? It's true that the driver may do it again in the future, but at least he didn't drive throught someone's living room last night.

Nice Job Alpine

Glad you were able to do it, but if he passed out behind the wheel he'd obviously had more than a few pops, which puts it in "more than a mistake" territory with me. -1 on the driver.

Hopefully when he realizes that some total stranger got in his car and drove it away he'll realize that he made a GIANT mistake, but who knows.

Wow. I'm way too skeptical, keep to myself, to ever:
  1. Stop at a red light and look at the driver beside me enough to notice he is passed out.
  2. Get out of my car and walk up to his in the middle of the road.
  3. Try to open his door while he is non-responsive.
  4. Get him out of the driver seat, and into either the passenger or back seat.
  5. Move my car off the road.
  6. Drive some random guy to his house that I have no idea where it is. (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt here and guess it was logged into idrive.)
  7. Hoof it all the way back to my own car that I left at some random spot near an intersection.
  8. And then finally driving off without letting the guy even know what I just did for him.

Sorry but I call BS. You either knew the guy, or elaborated a smudge. I would possibly believe it if you simply waked his ass up, and told him to get off the road. I would never get into some strangers car while they were passed out in it, and then drive off. Too many uncertainties that could screw him, and you both. I'd sooner expect to get baited by a set up like that. Either by the cops, or some hooligans.

+1, while it sounds like a good move to help someone out, things would have gotten interesting if the drunk guy woke up w/ some stranger driving his car

+1 on all accounts. Well, don't know if I'd drive a drunk stranger's car though.

Props to you for the good intentions man. Explains a lot that you semi knew the guy. That guy did get extremely lucky. Maybe I'm too much a skeptic, but I can't see many people here (or in general) do something like that for a stranger. I guess his owning a Bimmer did help though.

Because he got off. If he was dumb enough to drive drunk in the first place, he'll do it again. He got lucky, but has had no real consequences for his actions.

We've all been stupid, probably a good majority of us have driven drunk at least once in our lives. Some people do it for years without getting caught, but it will catch up to you.

I got lucky one time, and was let off the hook without a DUI (cops drove me home) 3 months later I was back doing the same shit.

...And guess what, I got busted.

Spending that night in jail changed my life, and I'll never do it again.

Props for being a nice guy, unfortunately usually it's just not enough.

+1. however I would be afraid to to this personally though. I mean it is a stranger and I wouldn't trust letting them in my car.
