Need a SUV, planning on making it my daily

Im inbetween an 07 X5 4.8 or 07 Range Rover Supercharged.

I havent driven the X5 but love the looks of it with the 20's and also like the ability of having the 3rd row. I need a larger size SUV to move all the stuff back and forth from my boat so smaller SUV's like a cayenne is out.

Im looking for something that is very comfortable and luxurious but still has some power.

Im in between these two cars

X5 FTW. The 4.8i is thirsty however. Stay away from the RR. Range Rover: Making excellent mechanics out of ordinary people. I want to drive a car not repair it.

A good friend of mine got a used 2003 RR last year from a local RR dealer. There were a few things that needed to be fixed at the time of the sale, but the dealer did it all for no charge (I assume it was part of the negotiation that anything broken would be fixed). Since then the car has been faultless.

Remember that the current RR is a clean-sheet BMW design, with Ford/Jaguar performing the facelift and shoehorning the new engines in. Statistically it could be less reliable than an X5, but don't think an X5 is perfect in that department either.

Overall I'd pick the RR. It's so much more special than the X5. It makes no attempt to be sporty, so the ride is very smooth. The interior is such a nice place to spend time. Every time I ride in my friend's RR I always forget how comfortable the seats are. The boxy cabin makes it feel like there's tons of room.

Not to muddy the waters, but have you considered the Merc GL or the Audi Q7?

That being said, of the two you have listed, I'd go with the X5 before the RR. Too many questions about quality with the RR seem to ALWAYS creep up.
I personally know someone that worked for Ford when the took over Jaguar. He couldn't believe how antiquated their designs were and how bad the build quality was when they first got there. The Jag way of thinking was from the '60s at that time.

Do you actually own one? Because we have two Range Rovers and haven't had a "mechanical disaster" with either of them..

Stay away form the RR. My dad bought 2002, I believe the MSRP was near $100k. After 5 years it was worth around $15k. It was about $1k every couple months to replace something or another. He thought he would keep it forever but it ended up being a huge liability. All the stories about Land Rover reliability are TRUE. Don't be swayed by the "baller status" bullshit.

I have an X5 4.8i and love it - great on the hiway and plenty of power and creature comforts. The RR is also very nice so you cant go wrong. Just confused if the Cayenne is out due to the size, how is the X5 any better - not that much difference. I personally wouldnt consider the X5 has large. If size is the concern the RR may be the way to go.

Well I must agree with the RR fans. A Rolls Royce would make a much nicer daily driver than a BMW SUV.

X5

Try the new X5 diesel 3.0. I think it's the best X5 they sell. 550+ miles per tank...

I drive a regular Range everyday. Not the S/C one. And let me tell you, unless you drive like a grandpa, your going to be at the gas station 2-3 times a week. This thing eats gas if you push it.

I can only imagine the cost for the S/C one..
