I'm working on something for a friend who is the student chair on the Indiana University Student Foundation. They have a yearly bike race fund raiser called Little 500 and he was asking for ideas for a logo/design for this year being the 60th ann.
feedback me if you've got a second, this is my 3rd version and I he really likes it already, just want to see if there is anything extra I can add (or take away) to make it just a tad bit better. thanks |

I'd remove all the bevels and soft shadows. They scream "amateur". I'd also be creating that in a vector program like illustrator. Logos should be created in a vector format 99.9% of the time.

well this is the best I've got at the moment (PS), I don't use Illustrator yet as I haven't learned it in school yet.
Also I'm trying to create some depth to the design so its not just a flat design. |

Yea, but for a logo like that, you create depth with hard shadow lines, not soft. And the bevels aren't necessary. This is coming from a designer who's been doing this for 12 years now.

ok so give me a little tutorial on what I should be doing here. Remove the bevels and just make the drop shadows on everything small and hard? What If I was trying to make that center ring look 3d?

You can make logos look 3d without shadows and gradients. It's hard to give a tutorial without showing you in person, but I can provide some examples that might help get you going:
http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?...b8eusd7zplkd2x http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?id=6859 http://www.sportslogos.net/logo.php?...9zre7gku4vmnte When it comes to logos, simple is always better. They say a good logo should be able to be identified when drawn in the sand with your finger.

Wow this video saves my ass yet again. Needed an idea for a music/lyrics inspired design for school... still need to add lyrics though.
