I'd have to say that last pick up driver probably just thought his car was superior because it was bigger and its a truck.

Everyone knows trucks are impervious to all elements.

Doesnt matter what kind of system the car has. Summer tires going up a hill in snow will not work. Ever.

Probably fine with chains/spikes/very-narrow-snows.

You also need a bit more aggression in those situations. You can't afford to slow down too much (which comes with its own dangers), or else gravity will take you.

The road by my parent's place has a lot of lean to it, and there are cars piled up in the ditch there when it snows hard.
When I had my evo, my car also started sliding on that street, so I floored it and 'crabbed' the car half-sideways down the street... basically throwing snow at all the folks in the ditch.

It probably would have taken quite a bit of momentum or studs/chains to get up that hill. There's quite an impressive glazing underneath that snow. At that point, you're pretty much only left with the most extreme options or go around.
