Yeah, insurance is the way to go if you're worried about breaking your equipment.

CPS (Canon Professional Services) isn't insurance. If you're a Canon shooter, you should look into it as well! It's a free service (cleaning, repairs, etc - SILVER members) for professional Canon photographers.

Dude, I don't expect a filter to keep the lens safe from anything other that dust/foreign objects hitting the front glass. Not like dropping it or anything. I had a kit lens that I didn't filter and the outer element got scratched so it was junk after that. Thanks for the tips though |

I figure for my day to day activities i think its good to have the filter/protector on. if i'm taking photos of my family or an important event and i want the best of of the camera, i take the covers off and let it be naked.
Day to day though, all the L series lenses i own with a filter on them still blow my mind for the quality they give off. And considering the last wedding i was at, the camera being used was a Canon XS with a mid level lens by the wedding photographer, I figure I can't be doing badly with the filter on. I also take them off when there's lots of lights giving the potential for the filter to cause an extra unneeded lens flare. |

I fucking hate when this happens and I look at the people getting married like "Really? This is the schmuck you hired for $1000?". I'd have done it for free.

Sadly i've seen a lot of the photos that were taken by the photographer too, not too much worth keeping in the lot. Pretty unfortunate considering it's a day that a lot of people would like to document. |

this is one of the things i dislike about the digital age of photography, it's made it easier for anyone to pick up the equipment and pose.
I don't think i have the ability to wedding photograph yet, but i know i can take better pictures then a lot of these people stealing money from others who they have convinced they are professionals. Oh well, can't stop people from trying to save a buck or two. |

if you are technically sound and can show some creativity in your shots and take some grouped photos and some shots of the couple, you could easily charge $1000-1200 per wedding and get some good referrals. I've debated doing it for easy cash on several occasions but i just don't have the time available to make it consistent enough to be able to build up a small portfolio and make it worth while. |

sorry, i worded myself poorly, I meant "poser"
i find there are a lot of posers out there that will pick up the cheapest equipment they can and (like you said) go to costco to print the shots with no post processing. I know what you're saying about the "journalistic" style of photography, I've seen/done lots of running towards cameras dressed in a suit. and seen lots of flying kicks and such. Best is to have a nice combo. I wouldn't mind teaming up with a proper wedding photographer to help out and be support just so i can learn more and gain experience. I think it would be pretty fun. |
