1. Fully Electric
2. Performance Hybrid
3. Full ICE
4. Retro
5. Plug In Hybrid

1. Fully Electric: The M5 could have had 1,000+hp but with a range of probably less than 240miles on the US EPA cycle. That wouldn't have worked, especially given how each country has different charging infrastructure, and with the USA still being far behind many other developed countries.

2. Performance Hybrid: The latest 992.2 Porsche 911 being the prime example here, or the Chevy Corvette E-Ray. Electric turbos, small battery, smaller lighter electric motors that supplement the ICE engine instead of try to make up for the ICE engine, all while keeping the weight of the car down, but no all electric range. This wouldn't have worked for BMW because this setup hardly effects CO2 emission cycles.
I would much rather see a fully electric M5 sedan with straight line performance of a Tesla Plaid and the dynamics of an F90. If BMW were willing to innovate, a perfomance hybrid would have been incredible for the new M5. Wider and higher torque and hp bands, add minimal weight and instant throttle response all while keeping the V8 with a single larger turbo.

Instead, we get the worst of both worlds. For some reason, a V8-hybrid with a detuned ICE engine attached to 1000lb heavier car, rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring to "hide" the weight. I'm sorry, you can't really hide the weight of the F90, so I can't imagine how you will try to hide the weight of the G90. Those poor tires and shocks..

Ultimately, BMW knows the G90 isn't going to sell well, it is priced so low, barely above the F90 non-comp MSRP.

The automotive industry has lead times measures in years. Be the time they realized the XM is not selling well the M5 Design and specs were well locked in. The only other option was axing it alltogether, but why bother if they have the drivetrains anyway and the 5er to build upon?

I can’t help it but compare weight to F80 at -1800 lbs. There is another car hiding in that M5

Guessing in the end they wont produce as many of these to give the illusion of scarcity. Trying to get people to buy M8's, i5 M50's, and XM's is like pulling teeth, the cars just don't move. M5 will be a little easier since it's priced in the realm of reality at least.

What's the best case for this car is what I ask myself and what it would look like.. G90 M5cs.. 5200lbs, 800hp, buckets, forged wheels with a 160k+ sticker, in what 2028? Car is in production until 2031 supposedly. Curious to see how the battery tech gets updated by the end of the lifecycle on this car.

I really like it. The F90 is honestly too fast already for the streets. The G90 didn't need to be any nimbler or faster. I'm looking for a better interior and smoother ride in the G90 over the F90. I will be getting one in 26. I wish they would make a 7 series M, similar to the Mercs S63. Thats where I'm at now in life with 2 little guys. If I want something to toss around, I'd buy an M3 or p-car instead. Happy with the direction on the M5.

Agree you can’t “hide the weight” but M have a good track record of hiding it in spite of modern “porker” dimensions. Regarding the natural stress on tires and shocks, the stress testing they do mitigates that with improved materials, I assume. Ze Germans can’t help being German. 😉

Probably. But the F90 “on paper” time is still faster than the G’s.

Tires and brakes are gonna be changed often due to the extra weight. Gonna be a pricey car to own/maintain.
