Ok, but *everyone* else's jobs are pushing paper, cleaning toilets, building stuff, etc. None of which could require them to go get shot at or killed on any given day.

So your comparison is invalid. The job is quite different between someone who serves as a police officer / military vs a plumber / paper pusher / etc. A higher level of respect and gratitude should go to the first in my view.

My brother serves in our military - I'm thankful for his willingness to go out there and do what he does.

Mining, construction, fishing, logging and oil occupations all have higher rates of death and injury than everyone bar the military that was listed.

Correct, but the difference is speaking as a retired police officer. The injuries and deaths sustained by the occupations you list were accidents. I have been punched, kicked, stuck with dirty needles, spat upon dozens of times, broken my knee, herniated discs in my neck and these are a result of attacks on me for doing my job. This is just a small sampling. I have also investigated horrendous sexual assaults and child abuse, pulled more dead people out of Lake Ontario than I can remember, dealt with a crib death in a crack house and that same weekend held a 10 year olds hand while she died after being dropped off a building. None of these incidents were accidents, these are situations I put myself in.

How was your day at work?

Few of these individuals in those industries would be the next Einstein, so while we could argue whether not an insignificant number of these deaths were due to poor decision making, we'd be missing the more important point.

The important point is this - miners, construction, etc - those industries...how many of these deaths occurred because they placed themselves in harms way to protect someone else from someone who was actively trying to cause that person harm or death?

Compare that to the police / military. I think you'll find it lopsided.

Thanks for serving! I would not be a very nice person if I had to see all of that...I'd probably struggle a great deal to be honest in not viewing society with even more cynicism than I already do.

I'm one of the lucky ones, I don't seem to suffer PTSD although I have moments that I'm not sure.

I loved my job, and have fond memories of working with great people and getting to do some fascinating things but the job takes a toll and that toll is very high for some of my piers.

Well, it's a toxic topic and an off one. Yet I'll share my opinion. Not to hurt anybody, just for some objectivity hardly needed here.

If you really knew what he does "out there" it could change your mind "a bit". Or may be still not.

If you feel you could do something better than that you should've gone a different way (a complete quote is here, the last one). They would've appreciated it even more if you died.

I've had some nasty incidents with police officers humiliating me in search for a way to suck some money out of pure nothing and telling me it was "for my benefit" they were spending their time with me while a crime was being committed elsewhere close. I would've "thanked" them in a very special, most deserved way, honestly. (It's fine if the police in some countries isn't exactly as corrupt as in others, and still...)

The military don't really serve the people they seek admiration from. They have their selfish goals while serving the politicians who aren't always really thankful, probably. Let it be the country, if you like. Then they should thank the others back for doing their jobs and paying their taxes.

So how great is it to live in a western democracy? I fully support your right to say shit like this to me, but I have to wonder that given the whole cancel culture if you'd be so magnanimous if I said something offensive to you? Sorry you've had some bad experience with the police, my experience has been that the police respond to what they have in front of them....two of my children have joined the military. I have nothing but pride and respect for their commitment. I suspect you don't get it, and that's ok nothing I say will change your mind clearly so I'll just say have a good weekend.

Having spent a career in the military, including combat where people were trying to shoot me out of the sky, I can say you know nothing about what you are talking about. Most people in the military have no selfish goals period and are not in service to politicians.

I have never known anyone in the military that was seeking admiration for doing what they were doing. Is it nice to have what you do be appreciated? Sure, but that goes with any job in any aspect of life.

You have a perspective that negates the good that anyone does in this life. You must be a very miserable person.

Wow. Have you ever been in the military? If not, shut up. If so, thank you for your service.

I for one am thankful for our military and especially the courageous individuals who serve in it. So from my family to yours, thank you for your service. I think thanking servicemen and women for their service when you see them is the very least we can do as the benefactors of their service and sacrifice.

You have to take care of yourself, the job isn't for everybody. It sounds like you've taken steps in the right direction. It can and will get better but you have to be in charge of doing what you need to. Hopefully you have support of friends and family. I have some bad days but for the most part I'm ok. I think I'm one of the lucky ones.

Peace
