I don't know if you are a vet or a newb to this drive, but 4-4.5hr from Ft. Lauderdale sounds a bit optimistic to me. Especially heading into a weekend. Everybody and their second cousin twice removed is heading into the Keys on a Friday, and lots of them are driving motorhomes, and/or towing boats. It is frequently a long slow parade. It might be prudent to allow some extra time, like a couple of hours, especially if you are committed to arriving at a certain time. Best of luck to the happy couple, and stay away from the lionfish.

I have been dying to make that trek since moving to Florida. Im on the other coast and it sounds like about 8 hours total. Thought about going to Miami (3 hours), staying over and then shooting out early AM. Enjoy the trip...

It's my birthday on Sunday so me, the misses and a bunch of friends are headed to a brewery to imbibe in some ale.

Hahaha, definitely not my 1st time down fortunately. I'm headed down Thurs. around noon, so shouldn't have insane traffic. Otherwise, yeah you're totally spot on.

I live for the spots where the passing lane opens up to increase my time lol. Looking right now, it says it'll take exactly 4hrs to get down there. I bet I can knock off a good amount of time, but once you hit that single lane, who knows?

Watch out for the key deer. Those little buggers need all the help they can get.

West coast to Miami, and south to Florida City is all done on I75 and the Turnpike at reasonable cruising speeds (or better...your choice). Once you enter the Keys in Key Largo the road becomes primarily single lane through endless retail and tourist accommodations with very few opportunities for passing. The numerous bridges between islands offer beautiful views of the open ocean and Florida Bay, and the whole experience is definitely worth it. I just point out the Keys slog in response to your thoughts about the layover in Miami. I think you're on the right track there.

HAHA, I know about actual Lionfish. I was thinking it was some type of strange drag bar or whatnot based on the wording.

My wife is dreading the drive but we are 3-3.5 hours from Sarasota to Miami. Then once I hit the top of the Keys I want to drop the top and experience all there is to see.
After we driver it once, I told her we could take the Keywest Express out of Fort Meyers...but I need to drive it once to experience the beauty

It's a lovely drive if you're not in a hurry. Drop the top and go with the flow. If you see something interesting then stop for a minute and check it out. I made the trip a long time ago on a Goldwing Interstate. Open air is the way to go. Have fun.

One of the guys I was riding with was on a 23yo R90 and it broke down on one of the bridges. He ended up pushing it over half a mile to get off the bridge. Someone stopped to ask if he needed help and he asked them to let us know what was going on. He was bringing up the rear when he broke down. The good samaritan looked a little confused when he stopped to ask if we were waiting for a guy on an old bike. We must have been quite a sight as a group. There were three of us. I was on the Goldwing. It was cream coloured with dark brown leather and I had matching leathers and full face helmet. The guy on the R90 had an open face helmet, black jacket and jeans and he looked like he was straight out of a '60's British gangster B-movie. The third guy was riding a Yamaha V-Max and had a skull cap, black leather jacket and chaps. We all had a good laugh when R90 guy finally coasted off the bridge. All in all we had a great time on that trip. I highly recommend it to anyone who rides.

All of the bridges including the "7 Mile Bridge" are 2 lanes, and not overly wide ones at that. The strange thing is that nearly all of them permit passing, and they present the best passing opportunities. Not for the timid though.

Geez man, I can only conclude that pickings were slim then eh?

I mean, doesn't he have a friend, doesn't even have to be a good friend, or even a neighbour that he knows...

Seriously though, congrats to him, and have fun! Make sure you embarrass him!

A month ago I stumbled upon live crawfish in this grocery store I go to every now and then. They had it 2 weeks ago so hopefully they still have some Saturday so I can do a boil. I’m getting them in before crawfish season ends. Another reason I gotta move eastward.
