it's very good for first time because they don't even check your credit so you basically start with a 100% clean slate.

if you were born in the US, regardless if you're a student or not, you shouldn't have to apply for a secured credit card unless you completely destroyed your credit and need to repair it. otherwise, this is mainly for non-citizens or someone with a fresh social security number.

get a student credit card from wherever and learn to manage your credit. interest will be up the ass anywhere you go. as a new credit card holder, you don't have much room to shop around on credit limits, interest rates and other perks.

That depends. My dad got a second credit card in my name under his when I was 13. Do you think that built my credit? No, since I wasn't legal.

Also my dad knows about Credit cards and credit in general since his is good. So if I could just go under theirs to build mine then he would of already done that.

Maybe your parents went through a specific credit card company or did it a specific way.

how do you even get your name under a credit card when you're 13?

i'm sure the OP is of legal age so the point of this is to build his credit. as long as you're 18 you can have a credit card and start building your credit history. it doesn't matter if you are on your own or under your parents. being under your parents just puts them as a co-signer for you. it might help their credit MORE than yours but it still builds yours regardless.

maybe it's different in new england.

I am with stooken, if you are 18 (senior highschool or freshman college), any ccc will approve you if you request a credit line of $500 or less (go less and you get better chance of approval). As he/she said, after a year you can try applied for the big boys cc
