2016 BMW M3 ZCP  [0.00]
2000 BMW M Roadster  [0.00]
2004 BMW M3  [0.00]
2014 VW GLI  [0.00]
My parents gave me a 1999 Mazda Millenia when I started driving in 2004 or so. The car was super nice. Leather (heated) seats, nice radio, etc. I probably didn't deserve it at the time but I took care of it. Wound up passing it down to my brother (he's 5 years younger than me) as his first car too. After he was done with it, we sold it. A couple years ago, last I heard, the girl that bought it is still driving it.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Honda/Toyota/Mazda. All those Japanese cars are great and reliable. Could also look into a VW. I'm not going to recommend anything American because I think those all suck balls.

Lol I was joking as well since I suggested an equally outrageous car:

And to seriously make a suggestion, why not a Honda HR-V or Ford Escape? Teens like to be connected so I'd suggest a newer car if possible. Not because you can get a car that'll read you Facebook updates or whatever but because with the popularity of music apps like Spotify and the fact that many people have music on their phones, I'd suggest a car where you can change the songs/playlists using the actual vehicle interface vs. older cars where you have an aux cable but you have to physically use the phone to change songs which can be a big distraction.

Something with a manual transmission. I know they are out of favour in North America, but once you learn a standard you can drive anywhere in the world and rent anything in Europe. Plus, although I have no empirical evidence to back it up, people who learn on a stick are better drivers.

We bought our son a 2012 Jetta GLI for graduation, he previously had a 97 vr6 Jetta. 12k with 40k on it, pretty safe, well equipped and with the tsi engine it's got decent power without being a rocket. Plus he can tune it if he wants

why would you even joke about someone's kid being killed in a car?! You monster. A kid needs a car that can dish out more than it can take. So the AMG 6x6 urban assault vehicle is perfect for ramming little pimple faced boys in their prius' off the road.

Agreed. Both of my boys were taught to drive manuals and were/are required to own one as a first car to reinforce that. Started teaching them on dirt bikes when they were tiny so they understood the basic concepts behind the clutch/gas work required.

OP, you're in luck. I am offering VIP car service for concerned parents like yourself.
I am still in the process of acquiring my commercial licensing, but you can trust me with shuttling your kids around in my proven safe reliable van. I also provide chaperon services as well.

PM me for details.

This ^^

Convince the GF to buy a cheap 4 door, 5 speed civic and the car is great. Engine is solid, great roadtrip car, cheap to repair and she now drive manual with no issues and makes her a better driver because of it.

You have a point there, it is REALLY hard to text and drive in a manual car

This is honestly the #1 reason I give when people ask me why I would recommend that they get a manual for their teen drivers.
