Let me let you in on something others have probably already said.

There is hardly even any 1080P content!!! And 4k? That's a dream. Currently, most everything on TV is broadcast in 1080i or 720p....not even 1080p. The infrastructure and data speeds simply aren't there to broadcast in even 1080p. To get 1080p, you have to stream (probably compressed) or use Blu-Ray for true 1080p.

4k content exists, but it's very limited and what's out there always needs a great internet connection.

4k upscaling doesn't work...it's just fake frames added with software

My calibrated 82" Mitsubishi DLP looks better than 90% of peoples' flat TVs that introduce tons of weird effects (Soap Opera Effect, Motion Blur, Judder, poor blacks, poor whites, and generally over saturated picture). I have no lag because my image is directly projected on a mirror, so it's great for gaming and movies look incredible.

Many movie theaters still use DLP projection today, but the market wanted "flat" and skinny TVs that people still put on TV stands (not hung on wall so defeats the space saving quality).

Long story short, 4k isn't worth it and most flat panels are a compromise on picture quality unless you go super high end. The $1,000 65" isn't a good deal because it's a crap TV.

Like said by others, 4K is not worth it. Limited content, bunch of compression issues and 90% of people don't see the difference.
I bought myself a Samsung PN64F8500 Plasma 2 years ago, still haven't seen anything close to it. Samsung bought the Pioneer plasma division a few years back. If you can find them, I would still recommend them.
LCD/LED don't have the contrast ratio you want. I consider OLED as too new before I would buy it. It's organic so I can only assume the degradation over the years will be bad.

@BayMoWe335, DLP engines still have delay, even when projected directly on the mirror. The DLP engine will determine brightness, but everything else is determined by the screen you use.

I got a 60'' LG Plasma Smart TV when I bought the living room furniture. Has held up a solid 3 years now. Never use any of the "smart" features, but when I picked it up from BB I think it was roughly $850? The picture is pretty good, but I've noticed that lines get burned into the screen like if watching South Park, any horizontal line will stretch across the screen and just slightly soften colors in it's path. Kind of odd, but it's whatever. It serves it's purpose.

They do, but it's insignificant compared to their flat panel counterparts.

Had a Samsung 51" plasma that I bought in 2011. Picture was incredible with excellent sharpness and contrast. Unfortunately after less than 5 years it broke and would just continually power on then power down. With this extremely poor service life, I would never buy anything Samsung again.

To replace this tv, I went with an LG OLED EG9100. So far I would say the picture quality is even better than my Samsung plasma. With the OLED, each pixel is able to fully turn on or off which gives true black levels unlike normal LED/LCD tvs. I'm perfectly happy with going with just a 1080p tv since around here Comcast is pretty much the only game in town and they're still in the stone age when it comes to new technology and high definition broadcasts. It'll be a decade or more before they have 4K broadcasts.

So another vote for OLED tvs.

With a Blue-ray this combination is really hard to beat, and I saw nothing better on the market !
+ 1 this is my setup too

Last of the Kuro KRP-600m's professionally calibrated with an Oppo BLu-Ray using it's Rotel sourced internals to pipe analogue sound to a Rotel RSX-1550 powering my B&W center and B&W rear speakers. I have a Rotel RB-1590 2 channel powering my B&W towers. And for the lows I have a pair of Hsu Research subs.

I don't see any need at this point for a 4k TV or an audio setup with anything more than 5 channels and a pair of subs.

When the time comes and my Kuro is dead I'll pick up an 80inch LG OLED when the price comes down and upgrade my speakers to Golden Ear Triton Ones with matching center or maybe B&W 800 series.

4K looks great in the store. But if they'd stop compressing the shit out of 1080, that would look great too imo. If they can't run 1080 un compressed, I can't imagine how bad they're gonna compress 4K. I'm out for now!

Your statement about Samsung buying the Pioneer plasma division is incorrect. Panasonic bought Pioneer's plasma patents/technology.

Thanks for all the input! Ended up getting a Samsung 65" 9000 series for a pretty good price. Got it all hooked up and pretty happy with it so far. Almost went for OLED but difference in price didn't justify OLED for now.

I'm still in awe how good my 4K Sony 65" HDR TV looks everytime I watch a show or movie.

I just recently upgraded from my Vizio 70" 1080p to a Samsung 70" KU6300 4K. Really love the picture and the colors are very dialed in. The built in apps work fast but I also replaced my Vizio 5.1 surround system with the Samsung HW-K950. There are some minor interoperability things like I'd like ARC, HDR and Atmos to all work through the same HDMI port so gave up just use ARC and Atmos. I will eventually remedy this once I get a smart remote. But very happy with the AV quality of both. If you look around you can find the 70" for $1200. I paid $1450 and when it was released, it was over $2k.

It's amazing where the prices and sizes of TVs are now a days. I remember paying about $6500 or so for my 50" Pioneer Elite 1010HD quite a few years ago. At least I'm still getting my money's worth out of it as I'm still using it in my family room. And then I grabbed a 60" Pioneer Elite 141FD Signature when Pioneer announced they were pulling out of the TV business. I paid around $4400 for that one. Both prices were with the "inside" discount as I had a friend that worked at a local A/V boutique. I still have no desire to change replace either; especially the 141FD.

This! Others can say what they want. There is 4K content. The main reason I don't see a huge difference in the picture quality is because this TV does such a great job of upcoding the 1080i and 1080p content I usually watch to close to 4K quality. But there is a difference. For about the same price, why would you not want to watch the best picture you can get? YMMV.
