With the fanatic sales and interest that the 2 series has captured, not only from loyal and ole time BMW fans that prefer the older BMWs, but many, many new generation fans, it would be absolutely foolish, might I even add moronic to make the new 2 series in FWD.

Great decision BMW

So I assume a detuned S58 with a ZF slush box is on the horizon for the G87 M2. How exciting.

It has been called to our attention that a number of media outlets, including AutoExpress who first reported on Fröhlich’s quote, have tried to attribute his words to the soon-to-debut F44 2 Series Gran Coupe rather than the future G42 2 Series Coupe. These reports are false.

First, we already know with absolute certainty that the 2 Series Gran Coupe will be FWD due to past quotes made by Fröhlich himself, not to mention test mules confirm it. If that weren’t enough, we also have inside information confirming that the model names will be 228i and M235i, and these are consistent with the F48/F39 X1/X2 and new F40 1 Series (the 1 Series uses 125i instead of 128i because the *28i naming is only used in North America). Finally, no non-M CLAR vehicle has a chassis code starting with “F”. Notice, though, that the existing UKL (FAAR) products I mention do have model names that begin with “F”.

Second, the nuance of his quote - “2 successor” - makes the context clear. That word rules out any possibility that the reference could be to the 2 Series Gran Coupe since it is not a successor to an existing model - it is a new addition to the lineup. He is therefore referring to the 2 Series Coupe. Incidentally, we can also rule out the 2 Series AT, GT, and Convertible since all of those will die once the current generation models end production.

More incentive to keep the older 1 series cars.
Will be a classic some day!

It's sad to consider BMW is killing the 2er Convertible.

Super sad because the 4er is too large for my taste.

No way the Z4 will make up the loss in sales.

Lets just hope the next 2 Series Coupe and M2 will have a shorter wheelbase so it’s a more nimble car to drive. They should also concentrate on less weight, not more power. We don’t need 400hp+ if they can keep the weight down. My M2C is a pig compared to my former 1M. There are other M products for those who want lots of power. Lets keep the M2 a pure drivers car!

If it’s heavier and has a longer wheelbase than the current generation, I’d rather buy a Supra or 718 GT4.

Dimensionally probably no smaller would be my guess.

If they can get the weight down (see F10 vs G30 5 Series - bigger but lighter) then it would be good enough for me.
