Same here, I thought it would be a gimmick but muting and using the palm - fist - palm to set the nav to home address is very quick and easy to do without taking your eyes off the road.

I've only had the 3 a few days so haven't used the voice commands that much yet but I expect setting adhoc destinations will be the most common use.

Agree about opening the windows! Sunroof could be useful if it doesn't do it already as the button is a bit small.

Seen the new s class interior yet? Basically no buttons. I hate this trend. #savethebuttons

I've gotten very used to voice control in my home... hopeful it eventually gets as useful in the car. Basically just need it to work well to get the right song or playlist on Spotify

Somebody already thought of that, Tesla. It's pretty brilliant actually.

Only thing I use voice for is to send texts or make calls, and even then, rarely. The steering wheel controls and macro buttons let me do everything else very easily

Wouldn't it just be easier to you know, open the window myself with my left hand? Have we really become that lazy where we can't even bother to open a window by moving our harm and pulling/pushing a switch?

I don't know about that. Both BMW and Audi are basically copying tech from Mercedes that came with the current generation S-Class was was released and now Mercedes is coming out with an entirely new generation very shortly. Things like the front camera reading potholes and adjusting suspension and the LED headlights blanking out parts of the light are all Mercedes innovations.

They are just buying tech from the same places Mercedes is buying it from

Bosch is one of the many players reselling this type of technology

Retrofitted? When have you ever seen BMW backport features to existing models? I'm waiting to see how they handle Android Auto for existing ID7 cars.

By retrofitted, maybe some features can be coded, once those cars receive a post July 2020 iStep.

I'd really like to see BMW take a more Tesla like approach to software updates. Maybe one day....

Yes, so far only Range Rover has a breakthrough with gestures, but they have terrible multimedia.

Literally you have to press one easy to use button and the window goes down. Not only that, I can’t see “hey Bmw” dropping the window 3 inches.

Just more pointless tech to distract us from the diluted driving experience and muted sounds of modern cars.
Colinv6 makes a very good point. When a human touches a button, our brains create a unique imprint combining the touch point, motion, reasonably short movement duration, and confirmed absence of distraction - or commonly known as muscle memory. Gesture controls stop short of creating a complete muscle memory experience.

This is the very reason why certain "everything ought to act as an iPad" attempts - such as controlling A/C vents with touch controls - will fail. If the motion comes with distraction (who wants to take eyes of the road while adjusting any control), muscle memory will not be satisfying and become rejected. Absence of distraction is one of the key elements, in addition to others.

In all likelihood, the majority of gesture controls will be underutilized.

And this is way the over reliance on touch screens and voice commands is an utterly stupid trend that has infected the car industry.
