Imagine downforce on your car (or a F1 car) gluing it to the ground, reverse that thinking and you have a plane. The plane can glide a long time without thrust until gravity does it's thing.
And yes... planes engines are powerful.

Capacity models (vehicle density) can further reduce speed limits from the free flow speed.

other matters, not of concern to a civil engineer, may also affect speed limits.
Then you have lobbies... some speed limit do not make sense at all.
You have the "Speed kills" let's reduce it again and again and again.
There are several experiment of no speed limit. People end up adjusting their speed to the conditions themselves and less accidents.
We have cars that are safer, brake faster and handle better, but yet, we still lower speed limits.

I say let's train the drivers better...

Earliest evidence of eyesight magnification comes from the exploits of the Ancient Egyptian engineers in the 5th century BC.

This thread is going to increase my knowledge of small talk facts.

Archaeologists tell us humans have been eating crustaceans (lobsters, crabs, shrimp) from prehistoric times to present.

I guess that at that time, anything that doesn't kill you right away is food.

How painful my death would have been just a few decades ago. I'm type 1 diabetic, and I can't rea the word STOP on that big red sign. Without modern medicine and tehnology, I'd have been miserable 14 to about age 16, then be dead.

The positive side of that, my diabetic genes probably die out before I can reproduce

Maybe, but half those fuckers are out in a couple of days and they at least get to bring a couple things. You don't need a time machine to experience having to survive in the wilderness.

i always thought US speed limits were the way they are because they have to account for the shittiest cars on the road and their braking distance / combined with human reaction times and poor upkeep of the road surfaces.

germany has a much higher standard of who they let drive and what cars/modification can be done. you can't just run some shitty rep wheel, it has to be TUV/JWL approved for instance. You can't run super sports in the winter.

probably why they are allowed to have an autobahn and we aren't.

Since we have quite the interesting collective here, spanning in a wide array of backgrounds, let's bounce some topics off of each other and see if we can shed some light to odd ponderings.

While I was driving during lunch yesterday, paying no attention to speed limit, I wondered; how are speed limits set on each road. What constitutes that particular speed? What factors are involved in determining said speed? Could it be number and angle of curves on that road, whether or not it's a residential street, how many side streets are connected, etc. Or could it be some guy who drives down the road once construction is completed and thinks to himself, "Yep, I feel comfortable driving at this speed" and reports back to the office, this is the speed that everyone needs to drive.

No stupid questions here. All inquiries are open. I'd prefer for people that genuinely do not know something and have always wondered about something, are not made to feel stupid. Please be kind in your responses. This should be pretty interesting until we derail the thread 3 posts in.
size of road, length of road, land zoning around road, connecting streets, straightness/flatness of road, population/vehicle density in surrounding areas, and a bunch of other factors determine the speed on the street.

But usually, towns/cities/counties/states spend years planning the development of the area and in that planning, they come up with what they and experts believe is the best type of roads and speeds for the area, and design the roads around that. That is factored by population of the area, desired population, businesses and desired businesses, vision for the area (more residential focused, business focused, industrial, etc. as well as do they want it more condensed or spread out and things of that nature).

There is a ton that goes into it. Having been on my towns planning commission and going through updating the town's development and roadway planning, theres a lot of work put into it that i never realized before. My town of ~20k spent millions of dollars and years of studies and workshops to come up with their updated plan.

I run and hide when I'm attacked by a freaking flying cockroach so I definitely want nothing to do with the stone age or titanoboas.

Yup, but still, who was the first Meffer. I'm sorry, but even starving to death, a fucking crab just doesn't look appetizing.

So you spent 98% of your time capturing food. Your teeth wore out at 26 years old. You spent the next 4 years in dental pain and eventually starved to death.

Remember that they were grooming themselves by eating each other ticks and other parasites... This is not fine cuisine. I am sure that a crab sounds great.
What about eating oursins, doesn't even look like food at all.

If you know what being really starving feels like... decency goes out of the window, this is survival.
