Eh often cans aren't your property. They certainly aren't in my town. I just hope people who get bent out shape about this live in a HOA so they can run around with a ruler checking if your grass is 1/4" too long , etc.

Yes, it's poor etiquette unless it's someone in your neighborhood that you know very well and they are OK with you doing this.

I don't have a dog at present. Not because I don't like dogs, I love them, but because they don't fit with my current lifestyle. I have had a few dogs that truly were well loved family members and I will have another in the future.
I have always picked up after them and toted the parcel back to my home or dropped it in a public trash can if one was nearby. I have never even considered dropping it in a neighbours can. I think that is very inconsiderate.
I have let my dog stop at neighbour's lawns to do his business but never more than a couple of feet from the curb. I certainly wouldn't let him go anywhere near the centre of the lawn.
I had issues with some unidentified dog walker a few years ago. Let me set the scene. I live on a corner lot. The side yard is sharply sloped and well treed with some robust rose bushes along a good portion of the curb. I don't have any lawn on the slope as it was a large rock-garden at some point before I bought the house. The shrubs that were there have filled out nicely and provide great privacy. Perhaps too much privacy. Enter unidentified dog walker. For some reason they decided that it was ok for them to discard their knotted bag of pre-enjoyed dog food into my rose bushes and shrubs. I didn't notice them right away apparently because when I did notice them there were six or seven poo presents strewn about under the bushes. I picked them up and disposed of them in my trash can. The next day as I was going to the mailbox(down the street) I noticed another fresh delivery. I picked it up and tossed into the middle of the street. Next day the same thing happened. Rinse and repeat for about a week. Then just as suddenly as it started the presents stopped appearing. I never did see who was doing it but apparently they finally got the idea that it was not ok to toss their dogs sh*t wherever they wanted.

Maybe I’m too busy to realize what’s happening to my trash can.

Then again, I’m responding to a thread about poop.

I got an email from said neighbor with his RING video. Needless to say, she always has a bag anytime she leaves the house now.
I would presume your wife wears your RING. She should.

When my dogs go on someone else’s property I pick it up with a bag and store the bags outside in an old plastic flower pot, which gets emptied into something that goes in my trash can on trash night. I would throw it out in a public trash can if there was one but would never throw it out in someone else’s trash. Occasionally, the trash pick up doesn’t always empty the trash can completely or a bag could break while emptying. If I saw someone throwing a bag of dog shit in my trash can, I’d make them fish it out.

Ok lets start with I don't much care for picking up dog shit so I don't walk my dogs. They go in the backyard. However my gf does walk them on occasion and I help by walking one of them, she's in charge of the poop though.

If you are indeed putting it in the bin before pickup I can't say I would care or even notice if you did. I'm not one of those garbage bin cleaning people. I also don't keep it in my garage. That being said she does not put it in other peoples bin because we do live in an HOA and have a bunch of sensitive whinny people who have nothing to do but walk around all day looking for shit to complain to the HOA about.

So she dumps them either in our trash bin or one of the public bins around the community. As for pooping in the lawn in general... yeah... maybe in some places it makes sense... but no one around here is having their kids play in their front lawn. Plus if they did that stuff is full of duck shit and iguana shit and who knows what kind of chemicals to keep it green (or you get fined by HOA) and not to mention dirt. So any remains of my dogs 100% organic none GMO poop should probably be their last concern

I would never throw my dogs poop in someone's garbage can but would not care if they threw theirs in mine.

I can see where it could bother some people.

It's not that I can't - I've honestly just never thought of it being an issue. I asked my girlfriend before I posted this since she never comes on walks with us what she thought and she agreed with the neighbor that it's extremely rude.

If somebody threw a bag in my trash can, it would sit at the bottom for all eternity unless I took it out myself. My garbage men never pick up the bins to dump them, they just pull each bag out one by one

I would just carry it home and put it with the rest in a dedicated bin rather than put it in a handy neighbor's bin too.

We buy the bags from Amazon and have little dispensers on each leash so always with us. Our town has them too, but really for tourists.

We always pick up after our dog, even if it is runny.
We tie the bag in a knot and toss it in a construction dumpster, city can, or bring it home. I wouldn’t leave it in a neighbor’s (private, they are owned by residents here) can, even on garbage day. It just isn’t ever that far to go to get a more appropriate disposal can.

Why does it bother me? With just the two of us we don’t generate that much trash so often the sanitation guys just reach in and grab the two of three small bags we have. If others throw their poop bags in they remain at the bottom of my can so the next time I throw a bag it has smashed the bag, sometimes releasing the poop in my can…. Now it smells like shit. I have two dogs and bring bags home. I keep a small metal garbage can that I deposit my dogs bags into so when I take out my garbage, I empty our bags into a proper garbage bag so they don’t collect at the bottom of tha can. I’ve even seen folks walking dogs not paying attention and throwing their bags in neighbors recycling cans…

We had an odd fad some years ago when dog walkers would actually bag the poop, but leave the bag on the sidewalk or someone's lawn. I never did understand the behavior, but perhaps some folks just didn't want to be caught holding the bag.

I usually pick up my dogs’ poop and never have I thrown it in anyone else’s garbage bin except for my own. I normally tie up the bag(s), carry it around and throw it in the trash when I get home. I picture it as using someone else’s water hose. I wouldn’t want someone to come use my water hose or throw things in my trash bin so I don’t do it in reverse.

Thanks but I don’t need your dogs poop or your garbage in my pail.

How you don’t get this is beyond me.

I don't think I've ever seen the guy here outside the truck. I'm not sure how it works there, but around here they have special bins so the truck just drives next to it and it automatically picks it up and dumps it. Doesn't matter if it's empty because the driver doesn't check them.

Recycling is another story and they have a separate truck and they do usually come with the driver and 2 guys who manually dump the bins in the truck.

That’s how it works at our SC home but here, no. The have the lifters on the back of the truck so if the can is full/heavy, they roll it out and use that which will empty the whole can but they usually flip open the lid and if they only see two kitchen size bags they just grab them and leave the can where it is…

Edit: and don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they are at least picking after their dogs but if they think the bags thrown in cans is fine, take it home and throw it your own can…

Not a dog owner... but am a former dog owner... fundamentally if the bag is sealed and I assume you mean the can is out on the street already to be picked up... I don't really see an issue.

Unless you are walking up to someone's can right next to their garage... then yea, that would be shady.

You pick up the dog shit, with a bag????

I just kick it into the gutter, and then wipe my shoe on the grass.

Me and the dog normally go in the backyard anyways. . .
