May be too much ,Touareg TDI V6 available early 09

I Feb, 09 VW will have the Touareg available with the V6 TDI. Bigg TQ numbers and up to 30 MPG. Might be over your price range but with the fuel savings.....maybe worth a look

Yes, but not so easy getting a hold of one, because of the fact that TDI's are generally sold way before they hit ground, with quite the waiting list for the 1st year.

If it wasn't for your wife I would recommend a Nissan Frontier Crew Cab with 4x4 or a Tacoma. You may get some GM/Ford Full size suv cheaper than Japanese crossover/compact-suvs because of the promotion American cars are running. If you are worried about cost, I believe those incentives will cover the gas cost many times over.

I would like to tag this as a following question:

I haven't done the exact math with diesel but let us take diesel to be $6 and gas be $4/gal. Assuming you have an efficient gasoline suv with 20mpg, to break even with gasoline the diesel will have to have at least 30mpg. Even at 30mpg I am only breaking even. Am I missing something blatantly obvious here? I fail to see why everyone is so enamored with diesel, except for the torque.

At most Travel Centers Diesel fuel is .60 to .80 cents higher...not $2.00 a gal. more. Maybe this is not the case in Irvine. In most the other states if you purchase fuel where the big trucks do it is closer than most think in cost. If you have not driven a Diesel of late....and you are a car guy....you should go for a drive. Unless you tow....alot... you will not began to get a payback till upwards of 100,000 miles. For me it is not just about money saved or money wasted.....new Diesels are Big fun....and clean....and not on every block. They used to be hard to start, underpowered and dirty to be behind. Thats not the case anymore. Go drive one, or talk to people who have lots of time driving one. I think torque, resale value and a longer engine life are a few of the reasons many like Diesels.

Not to mention I could get soy biodiesel. (I grew up on a farm) The Tuareg seems pricey to me though, I think I would be happier in an x3 or q5.
