It doesn't really matter if you get things in writing or not. Once you join the armed forces you become a G.I. (government issued, just like boots and guns). The Army can call you up at any time they want in the future to serve. They can do anything they want with you pretty much.

Hope you heard of a thing called the backdoor draft. If you're a reservist or full-time soldier and your contract is up, normally you can up and leave, but the Army has a clause in the contract that allows them to keep you serving regardless.

If your friend qualifies, intellect wise, to become a helicopter pilot, or some kind of engineer, they'll still put you anywhere they want or need you. Several months ago I read a story about how the Army was bringing in lots of kids who want to fly helicopters. Who wouldn't. But they only need so many. So they tell you qualify high enough to become a pilot, this is training, this is how long it takes, blah blah blah... but when you get there guess what happens, no Apache for you! To infantry you go!

I'm not saying the Army is bad, I know many great people in Army. They take people and turn them into great human beings. I've worked with some of them. It's tough right now and they need boots on the ground, not more pilots or engineers.

I love how people make themselves an expert on the military.

1. Yes it does matter if it's in writing, If you have it in you're contract and you preform the tasks in order to be qualified in the MOS you picked then you will have that job. if you fail at it then yes they will reasign you. However they give you a choice. They just don't send them to tanker school.

2. Ah the back door draft. Guess what...... its not a back door anything. Its in the contract that you sign. Every soldier that signes up signs an 8 year contract reguardless of if they only do two years on active duty.

If a soldier does 2 years and then gets out and the Army needs them back, then they'll get called back in. Its called the IRR inactive ready reserve. BUT once that 8 years is up then its over. They can't call you up.

3. Everyone that signes up has a choice. no one makes them do it.

I know of no indication that a person could be indispensable in the grand scheme of things.

That's not to say an (unnecessary) death isn't tragic in itself, of course, just that that tragedy is limited in space and time, and if that space and time does not overlap the person sending you to your death, well, that's something to keep in mind when you sign up.

Air Force basic training is for girls just like Navy basic is...let the man alone if he wants to join the Army. If he's joining the Army for the recruitment bonus then he will probably be miserable and end up in Leavenworth.

I love the people who think they know what its like in the military. I've had to correct people more times than I can ever count. Its not like what you see on some of these movies and shows, Jesus Christ people.

Yeah...movies are great fun to watch, but it warps peoples minds as to what military life is all about. Watch we were soldiers once and young and you'll understand a little.

When I joined the Army I hated it...I still hate parts, but overall the Army has been very good to me. Deploying helped me pay off some bills, and now I got a sweet ride. Oh yeah, I got my eyes lazed for free too...not to mention I can retire at age 42.

So...does life suck at times...yes...do people treat you like shit sometimes...damn right...is it worth it? Depends on the person.

Oh yeah...I'm getting my master's degree payed for as well.

Good for you, and I am really glad to hear you're getting most of it.
Yes, your job is tough, but you chose that route as I chose different one (although I did serve in my native country -- mandatory service). Your trip to Iraq paid for your eyes and you plan to retire at 42. My job paid for my wife's lasic and if my stoicks continue this way, I'll be done at 40...

So, it is all about wise choices in life...
