Having owned 3 Jeeps (CJ, YJ, TJ) - they are a GREAT second vehicle. I couldn't have it as my daily driver again.

The FJ I drove felt like I was driving a school bus, it wasn't for me. That said, Toyota reliability > Jeep reliability.

The Xterra, in my opinion, is comparably better in every category against the FJ. Compared with the FJ, the Xterra has MUCH better visibility, five full doors (unlike the half doors on the FJ), and can tow a house if need be.

I've owned a 2006 Frontier and 2007 FJ in the past, and currently own a 2013 Xterra. Absolutely love it. The FJ is too top heavy, so there's been a problem with it rolling over. The Frontier has a wider wheel base, so it's more stable, as does the Xterra.

From what I've heard from the off-roading community, Wrangler owners visit the dealership far too often for issues. I didn't have many issues with my FJ, and never an issue with the Frontier. Xterra is good thus far as well.

Just my opinion, but I highly recommend you look into an 07+ Xterra.
I'm sorry but my wife and I owned an XTerra, and it completely blew. Horrible off road and just a plain bad car. We replaced it with a 2012 Toyota 4Runner Trail Edition with KDSS... talk about night and day

Don't apologize! Glad it was an easy decision for you!

1st generation or 2nd generation ('05-'13)? The 1st generations were a POS, but I can't imagine the same being said for the 2nd generation Xterra.

And was it an '05/'06, or later? The 2005's had many, many issues that were resolved with the late 2006.

Don't take offense, if i were to get an FJ i would have picked the same color as you.

But a while back i saw one parked next to a handicap accessible porta potty and the image has never left my mind. Both of them side by side, blue body, white top, similar shape….

Now every time i see one i think of the FJ.

I agree they look so much better with a body colored matched top. What's the reason behind those white tops anyway?

Because that's what the original FJ40's had

You'd enjoy the diff mod hack then. Enables you to lock the rear diff in 2H and 4H instead of 4L only.
