Thanks man. It's time to make like a salmon on oil (long).

What do you mean by 1x, 2x, 3x?

The shitty part about UWTI and DWTI is that when oil fluctuate to 33% in 1 day up/down, you are basically screwed/doubled (Viceversa for dwti).

Long as Long/Short acct "Long" sir.

Oil Long
Oil Short
Obviously 3x is LONG on oil, whereas -3x is SHORT on oil.

Whereas your Long term vs short term investment are used "cap gain" vs "investment Income."

Sorry Im not aware of long/short in day trading. So is UWTI a day trade (short term holding) type of play? I thought its not ideal for long term.

@MrPrena can you help me understand this??

http://flip.it/i2Kdj

I don't understand how if the guy wanted to sell all his shares at X, but instead it surged AH. How come he ends up owing XXXXX? Shouldn't the shares he wanted to sell at X be suddenly worth XX?

During last good 6-7 day run (between 38-50) it was a good hold for a week.
Yes, for a Long term, USO would be ideal, because it is "Daily" 3x leverage.

I would not even give this guy a PENNY on gofundme, even if this guy is my biological brother. Pigs gets slaughtered in the market, and it looks like he got slaughtered and now OWE E-trade.

First let me give you the definition of SHORT
Short selling is the sale of a security that is not owned by the seller, or that the seller has borrowed. Short selling is motivated by the belief that a security's price will decline, enabling it to be bought back at a lower price to make a profit.

Basically, he shorted 8400 shares at avg price of $2/sr.
He was bearish. That is fine, but he speculated that stock will go $1, and shorted the shares.

Then this happened...
"The stock was last trading up more than 500% at $12.56 per share. "

He short selled for $2/sr, and now he has to COVER (Cover to buy it) at $12.56.

LOST of 10.56/sr.

Short is basically, betting against the stock, and when stock goes down, you make $.
I normally do not SHORT the stock, but buy PUTS for bearish speculations.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. I was under the impression that short selling means owning actual shares and gradually dumping them to drive the price down.

So basically this guy was borrowing shares at 2$, but wanted to actually buy and own at 1$? And then the next guy bought up all the shares on market, thus jacking the price up. So when it comes time for the dumbasses' order to fill he was FORCED to buy (cover) at high price, and THATS how he owes etrade?

That's why shorting gives me the heebeegeebeez and I would never do it. At least with a normal trade you know there's a limit to your downside but when you short.... you have no idea.

I'm sure plenty of people make money with it, but fuck that.

Yup, you are selling share which you do NOT own. So, if it goes down to $1, he can buy to cover at $1 which he shorted. Then he could've made 100%?

There are lots of strategies to limit the loss on SHORT SALE as well. You can buy a PUTs or some other things you can do. However, he went straight short on margin.

People also use SHORT as going bearish.
Yes, I abuse the word short as well. *guilty*

As I posted definition (off of website), people use the terms SHORT As..

I SHORTED XYZ by buying PUTS.
I SHORTED ABC by selling CALLS.
I SHORTED OIL/Au/Ag by buying inverse ETF/ETN.

However, people use "by" doing this and that to explain they did not short the stock.
