That's a VERY BMW interior.

We love our m240i and it checks all of the boxes, with a little more practicality because of the 2+2. But the 2er has aged (well I might add) in comparison to newer 2+2 options out there. It’s in need of a revamp both inside and out, but that’s not happening for a few more years. The z4 is here now and has the more relevant looks (personal preference) and updated interior. With a family vehicle already in the garage, we can sacrifice the +2 of the 2er and opt for the z4. Not to mention the front seat is still child safe because the airbag turns off when it detects a kid in the seat, so the few times one parent needs to take the kid somewhere and family car isn’t available, the kid can still ride in the roadster. In the case for my wife and I, we agreed that whoever has the kid will have the x3.
The closest to a affordable 2 seater performance to the Supra is probably the 370Z. The sales number is fairly low. As you pointed out, a lot of people would opt for more practical configuration such as the Mustang or Camaro or even some sport sedans. A typical sport sedan such as the 335 or C class or ATS are fairly close to the Supra in term of performance. I guess it does not help that Nissan does not really update the 370Z but maybe that is because the market for it is shrinking.

I am sure there is a market for it but my point is it is rather small overall. On the other hands, everywhere I turn here I see either a 3's or 4's or Mustang or Camaro.

370Z sales by year.

Took a good long look at the Supra today at the NY Auto show. I have to say, in person I think it looked better than expected! Just wish I could have gotten in.

The HRE and the suspension (1.3inch drop) is the only mod on this car. everything else would be stock.

Toyota Supra Without BMW Tie-Up Would’ve Been Over $100K

Quote:
The chief engineer loves the way the engine sounds.

Consumers can't even buy the new Toyota Supra yet, and it's already a polarizing vehicle among enthusiasts who seem dubious about whether the coupe's close relationship with the new BMW Z4 somehow compromises the machine. However, Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said the model couldn't exist for a price below $100,000 without the BMW partnership.

"To make the car so expensive would defeat the purpose of a Toyota sports car," Tada told Jalopnik. "That’s why it doesn’t use exotic materials like carbon fiber."

Toyota had input from the earliest stages about the Supra and Z4's shared platform, and then they split up to design the vehicles. Toyota's engineers were also able to tweak the suspension and steering setups for their own machine.

"It wasn’t a matter of lowering costs," Tada told Jalopnik about the level of shared input. "The Supra had to have an inline-six. BMW had a good inline-six."

Developing a new inline-six mill isn't a financially feasible option because Toyota is earmarking investments toward future electrification. The time for engineering the engine also would have delayed the Supra even longer.

Tada cites the engine noise as one of his favorite aspects about the new Supra. "Not just when you’re on the throttle, but when you’re off," he told Jalopnik.

The public finally gets to experience the Supra when it goes on sale this summer. Prices start at $50,920 (after the $930 destination fee) for the base trim, and the Premium grade goes for $53,990. The options list at launch is fairly small, including a $1,195 Driver Assis Package for both versions and a $2,460 navigation and JBL Audio bundle for the base model. By the end of the first model year, buyers would have eight choices for the exterior color: Absolute Zero White, Nocturnal Black, Renaissance Red, Tungsten Silver, Turbulence Gray, and Downshift Blue, in addition to Phantom Matte Gray or Nitro Yellow for a still-undisclosed additional fee.

Hard to get an impression on sound on a video but what I did hear was unimpressive to me. What grabbed my attention was the tires protesting noisily in turns at pretty mild speeds. Wonder if it's the tire composition, lack of width, suspension or combo?

It put down a faster N'Ring time than a more powerful (and not much heavier) M2. Now the M2 was on PSS, not PS4, but the Supra had to make up the time with handling, not speed, so I doubt its an unsorted mess.

Edit - looks like BMW is still burning off old supply of PSS on the Zupra too. So apples to apples, faster than an M2 around the Green Hell, not a bad thing.

Okay, more edit. 9s faster than an M2 and 3s faster than the M2c, both of which are on 10mm narrower tires, f/r.

Amusingly, BMW USA lists the M2c top speed as 250/280mph.

Interesting. I didn't know it ran the Ring already. Maybe just a herky jerky driver. Faster then the M2! Going to be a lot of upset M2 owners.

Looked but couldn't find it on the official Ring time list or anywhere else. Found these two a guesstimate by Toyota employees and a recent crashed one there. Do you have a link by chance?

Mea Culpa on that one. I grabbed the 7:49 time of a 606hp MkIV. But the Z4 ran a 7:55, so perhaps it's not far off what the MkV will hit.

Again, totally my fault for jumping the gun on that one.

No problem, we all red light on occasion.

Toyota saying about a 7:40, drinking too much sake me thinks.

I assume that's like saying a 10s 1/4 when it's really 10.997s.

And no one driving a Supra is drinking sake. It's all bier.

I quite like the Supra in Gran Turismo Sport, especially taking pictures of it. It's got an interesting shape just like the "other" M coupes before it

I dunno man. The more I see it the more I wonder why anyone lusting over this car wouldn’t just pick up a lightly used Z4 M Coupe for 2/3 the price. It’s got the same power output in a fantastic naturally aspirated engine, down SIGNIFICANTLY on torque, sure, but 150 lbs lighter and nearly as stiff.

And it can be had with a 6 speed manual.

A clean, less than 50,000 mile example can be had for about $35K. If you squint a little the two car’s proportions are nearly indistinguishable.
