If your gross margin on anything you are selling is over 20%, you are ripping people off by default.

In some cases, i.e. high tech and where a high amount of R&D is required and the product is not easily reproducible, it makes sense. Every other situation is a blatant rip off that is sold on marketing... you either accept it or you don't. Rolex is high quality and at least there is real craftsmanship so it's ok... but canvas LV bags, gotta be kidding me.

That gold/steel with black face Sub is nice. I think I would have caught the watch bug except I wear a watch GPS watch 80% of my days here and rarely even dress better than yard work clothes now. They would just sit in my office.

Now the only things I overspend on are golf clubs, my Porsche (which I don't need at all) and drinking at the club. I even lost the jones to buy more guitars and amps.

Some of you may know that I’ve been trying to land a Sub for my dad’s bday. Here are latest updates and rant.

Update 1: heard back from another contact and unfortunately it’ll be closer to $20K. I passed.

Update 2: spoke to manager at Shreve & Co in Palo Alto. Was told when I put my name down that if I were to buy jewelry or other watches from them, it would help move me up the list. That was in mid November. When talking to the manager few weeks ago and trying to see what I can do so that they get business and I get a Sub for my dad. Thought about referrals since my conversion rate for cars is about 80%. He asked me to call and come in after the NY. Left a message on Monday and didn’t hear back so I called back today. He ended up saying that he can’t promise to do an action for my action. There is no timeline and your name will be called when it comes up. I asked “how is that beneficial to me then?” He said “well you’ll just have to trust that we’ll do our job. We don’t dangle the watch over your head and ask you to do certain things.” I replied “trust goes both ways. You need to show me something too. Can’t just refer ppl to you and then maybe I’ll get it in a year or two. And what do you mean you don’t dangle it over ppl? Your store does practice the ‘if you buy other stuff from us it helps you move up the list!’” This we all know is true as many stores do the same thing. He denied it. I then asked “well how is that different from sending you business in hopes that I’ll get the watch sooner? You said to trust you but what does that entail?” He had no answer. I gave up and just told him it’s pointless. Needs to be mutually beneficial and not one sided.

At this point I don’t really care about getting the watch anymore. Too much work and ridiculousness and isn’t worth it.

It's honestly becoming a joke... i got mine in December 2018... i was on a list of 3 stores for about 2 months and then got a call from 2... luckily no hoops to jump, I just had to show them money. Now, it's gotten out of control.

Similar experience. Ridiculous. My solution— bought a Panerai and frankly I couldn’t be happier. Plus, I saved myself 10k$ plus.

It is a joke. Gonna do all I can to steer dad towards another brand. Forget Rolex. Their strategy is turning off a lot of younger buyers such as myself who won’t put up with their BS.

for the old 116610 sub. https://www.watchrecon.com/?query=116610

for the new 126610 sub. https://www.watchrecon.com/?query=126610

secondary market prices are around 11-12k for the old and 13-14 for the new. dont pay more than that.

and yeah, unfortunately, ADs have found that they can get flippers to buy all the less desirable models if they can get a desirable model so its becoming very rare that someone can just walk in and buy 1 rolex sub. Cant really blame them because its the only way the other watches sell. Its all on Rolex itself for this.

Easier said than done... in this price range there are no good alternatives...

Omega, Panerai, Hublot and the like, don't have the resale nor the recognition.

But like the guy above said... it is hard to get any steel sports Rolex at this time without some connection. I would not sell mine under $10.5k at this time.

Long story short-- a year or so ago, I got my Sub (no date) two weeks after putting my name down. I guess lightning struck.

Two weeks after that, I got a call from another AD that they had one available for me.

I guess sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Thank you. I've been looking on there as well. Basically $4-5K markup on black bezel and $9-10K markup on green bezel. Guess which color my dad likes? 😄

Are you referring to the Hulk or the Kermit? Either way, both are considered very special and rarer than the black one... those are almost never available.

Next up, the Rolex GMT aka the the pepsi...

Worst of all... Rolex Panda Daytona... this is the so called Holy Grail of Rolex... check the markup yourself.

Is there another watch brand that your pops might be interested in, or is a Rollie Sub it?

Yeah, he’s stuck on the Sub. Tried to get him on JLC, Omega, etc.

Surprised to see this thread!

I was recently trying to purchase the new 41mm Sub as well (first time buyer) but after visits to many different AD's and research on other forums, it just seemed like it was going to be unrealistic for me as a first time buyer. Some Rolex enthusiasts were saying it would be well over a year. That hurt.

Ended up getting a ref 16610 circa 1991 from an AD as soon as it was available. Was able to save some $$$ with a Chase Sapphire promotion as well. As much as I wanted the 41mm, I'm extremely happy with the decision I made with the 16610!

Are you sure the Rolex is going to hold it's value at the current mania pricing? Or that the other brands won't do as well? Honest question. I have owned only one swiss watch and am not educated on the topic.

No one can ever be sure, but right now it seems like everybody wants what they cant have and this is driving the prices higher and higher. Plus with Rolex handing out watches almost 1 at a time, the demand will always be high.

rolex is the safest bet. even when the secondary market was down, pricing wasnt much less than MSRP on the newer models.

AP/Patek SS Sports models are good bets as well.

The rest of the mass produced brands, Omega, Tag, IWC, Tudor, Breitling, etc. are not.

Makes me wonder what my watch is worth now. Omega, titanium and rose gold same as this one pictured (from Ebay listing at $5400). I don't actually remember what I paid but I think I paid low $4K ish.
