Most recent blogs say that it will be getting the 4.2L from the RS4 with a 30bhp increase. Who knows...

I would have preferred a 4.0TFSi but dont forget the RS5 has a few other things the RS4 didnt. It has the new MLP chassis for better weight distribution, sport diff, and it will also have a tuned S-tronic transmission. I think it also comes in manual. It will be great I'm sure.

I'd go with an M3 manual. Either sedan or coupe. If you keep the options down, you'll be in your price range. BMW dealerships are willing to work on price as they're hungry to sell cars. If your dealership isn't willing to work on a price, then go elsewhere.

C63 is a great car, no doubt - it's just short one pedal.

I thought CAR magazine confirmed that it was getting an improved version of the 4.2L in the RS4. Though they did say for months and months and months that it was to be Bi-turboed.

I think I will wait until the detailed specs of the engine are released and then debate their merits. The only thing that is certain is the chassis, the diff and the gearbox, all things that will transform the car over the RS4 and should make it more than capable of dealing with the M3, but it will still be miles off the GTR.

Well, CAR did change their mind. They often make mistake with tech specs for upcoming models and their chops are usually inaccurate. There will be a 4.0TFSi engine, but not in the RS5. It will feature in the S7 etc (A7 S version)

+1 on GTR. However, I agree that the RS5 only needs to keep up with M3, C63 and RS4. Simple logic tells you that the RS5 has to be better than RS4, otherwise there's no point in it being made...and if it's better than the RS4...

C63 if you want everyone to look at you with envious stares, and hear your throaty exhausts wayyyy before you arrive. Also, everyone will know your name at any club you visit.

M3 if you want a car that handles well, and looks pretty damn good too.

C63= Hey, sometimes its fun to show off a little to much. And be loud.
M3= Much better through the corners, unless, you like to show off by sliding around and making tire smoke/squeal (in which case you would get the C63)

So it comes down to:
Whether you are more involved in the drive or peoples looks :P

I had a C63 that turned out to be a lemon. After Mercedes bought it back I got an M3 coupe.

Powerwise the C63 offers a lot more than the M3, however I personally enjoy driving the M3 more due to the manual transmission.

If you enjoy modding your cars get the M3. Tons of products out there already...not much for the C63. Plus I get TONS of compliments on my tricked out M3, and almost none on the C63. C63 looks too much like a regular c-class for people to really notice it.

Trust me, they notice the massive exhausts and their massive noise :P

IMO MB Exhaust > BMW Exhaust by a lot

here's an example:

you only need to watch the first 10 seconds...

Too bad I can barely tell the difference between the C63 and C300 except from the back by looking at the tail pipes.

They have the same fender flares and everything :

I know you will like what you see and feel with the M3, it's a great car.

Also recent reports say that the DCT that available with the Z4 and 335i is much better behaved than the one in the M3, in fact thay say it's the best DCT available anywhere. It may also be wise to check out available in the US if you are either interested in the 335i and DCT.

I also see that you are still considering another S5, I don't know what is happening in the US or whether this is of interest to you but here in the UK the S5 is now available with the SportDiff which does make a dramatic difference to how the car feels and performs in corners, this might not be available yet in the US but it may be worth asking your local dealer on the time frame of this option.

Anyway I thought it's best to advise on all available options open to you to help you make the right decision.

SportDiff, 3GMMI, and LED Taillights are all available on the 2010 S5, which is why its on my list I hear it does wonders! Footie, you probably have the best idea of how I feel about the M3 coming from an S5, how do you like the cockpit? Did you feel like it was a compromise coming from the Audi?

DCT for the 335 is not available yet, but I think I would go with a 6MT in that car anyway. The M3 would be a tougher choice though.

Prior to driving the new S4 I would have said go for the M3, no question, but after a decent spirited drive in the new S4 with SportDiff I can honestly say that I would happily forgo some of the extra performance from the M3 to have an S5 thus equipped. I personally prefer the normal driving manner of Audis over that of either BMW or Mercedes and upto 7/10th I would still have rated the Audi better but after that point the normal 335i type BMW was better with the M3 better still. Now that I have sampled what happens when the diff start to work it's magic I can say that for me at least the S4 gets to within 9/10th of the M3's magic. I turns in sweeter than before it's grips to death and when the tail does go a letter is delivered to you a good 5 seconds before you need do anything and even then things react in slow motion, not the snap that even the M3 can give. All this and it's still the nicer drive at normal speeds. The only thing missing for me is the DSG but then you are a manual guy so no problems there then.

I am no longer a racer and the thought of taking my harder earn money to the race track does not fill me with excitement. If you aren't a trackday junkie then seriously consider the new S5 or S4 because now with this diff their appeal is very hard to resist. As for the interior, it's one of the biggest adjusts I have had to do, the S5 is superior in feel and quality but that's my opinion and others may think different. I much prefer the seats in the Audi and the steering wheel but I am starting to get use to it's extra thickness. I also don't agree with ones who rate the HK Logic7 system being as good as Audi's B&O system, the Audi had better separation, better defined and better tones, maybe the individual system in the BMW is better but not the Logic7.

If your heart is set on the M3 then you could do a hell of a lot worse, I enjoy mine every journey I make and get a buzz from driving it but for me in the UK the difference in price between the similarly specced S5 with SD and the M3 is over £9K and after driving both I would keep the dosh and buy the S5 or better still save another £2 more and go for the S4.

P.S.

This is not a M3 bashing only how I feel now that I have had time to reflect on the ownership of both and more importantly driven an S4 with SportDiff.

Did you even read my post? I owned a C63 for 9 months. I know firsthand that almost nobody notices it.

Also, come by and listen to my Meisterschaft exhaust, it makes the C63 exhaust sound rather tame.

I heard the SportDiff only made that genuine handling difference under heavy throttle...how did the car handle for you under power through the turns? Is corner attitude throttle adjustable?

Don't know about your situation but we've had a C63 in our stable for about a half a year and it'd be a bold-faced lie for me to say that the exhaust doesn't do anything less than get people's attention. It mainly happens during aggressive downshifting.
