I was in plenty of high school and college bands (not impressive at all i know, but due to that I know a lot of people in moderately successful bands). We usually bought t shirts, cardboard, stencils, and spray paint from AC Moore, made our own shirts, printed our own cds etc. All our money came from ticket sales for shows. We made almost no money on CDs or shirts, even though we were doing it ourselves and not splitting the costs with record labels. Some of these friends have gone on to real labels. They still say the same thing. Shows are what makes money, cds and merch just spread the word.

Also, most of the songs I'm getting from online (and not personally from a friend in a band asking me to listen or buy his cd) are the artists that are already rolling in money anyway.
