It has a functional purpose when your hands aren’t at 9 and 3 and you aren’t letting the car do the shifting for you. Interestingly enough you left Porsche out of the “sports cars” category, you say back in the day as if manufacturers have ceased to make manuals. You may like the removal of it and that’s fine for you. The day we “evolve” into manual gearboxed Porshces plummeting in price compared to their PDK variants then your statement will have some merit to it. |

People acting like the shift lever is a manual that BMW is taking away from them. It’s still an automatic

This very informative video shows Panoramic Vision in action (an integral part of iDrive 10). Coming to the Neue Klasse cars (late-2025) and just about everything in the BMW lineup from 2027 onwards.
Since the G90 comes out before that, it retains iDrive 8.5 (the "old" tech). I'm sure there will be M-specific features to Panoramic Vision once we see it in the G90 and other M products.

I was hoping to finally replace my 1998 Compact 3 series manual with a 5 series. Guess it wont happen again!! 🥵😡
When will they start making a 5 series that is a proper sportscar? I feel like my life is over before that happens.. And now you are telling me they are projecting things onto the entire length of the windshield? I want a 5 series that handles on track that i can shift like the F1 cars of old, with one hand on the steeringwheel! 🤠🤡 My biggest question is when BMW decided to make a tank of a 4 door 180mph autobahn-cruiser instad of a nimble sports car that i can drive through cones on the weekend. There is something they are getting totally wrong in Germany.. ![]() |

Hopefully manufacturers start to wake up and smell the coffee (or in this case, gear oil), but unlikely Probably just a few basic buttons. For the rest, it's "Hey BMW" I guess. https://www.autoweek.com/news/a60129...s-regulations/

The only thing I like about where BMW is going is the fact that it makes me love my F87 more and more

This is a shame, I really haven’t been won over by the new exterior design for the 5, but seeing that the light switch shifter has permeated such a prolific M car is unfortunate. The silver lining is that the traditional physical shifter can be retrofitted on the MY23+ cars. A painful expense, but hopefully they have an option for it, though I think it’ll be unlikely.

The G80/82 (base 6MT versions) and G87 (6MT) are the last BMW models at the proverbial fork in the road between BMWs’ mechanical past vs their future toward electrification and automation. They’re light(er), have manual transmissions, and handle nimbly. Not saying what comes next won’t be fast/quick (of course they will be faster/quicker). But 5000+lb sports cars with an automatic transmission (or no transmission at all) will never feel like a 3750lb M2/3/4 with a 6MT. Get one while you still can.
