You are both 100% right. Thats why german is quite hard to learn, there are so many expressions for one thing.

The more casual way to say "I am..." is "Ich bin..."

More etiquette is to say "Ich heiße..." or "Mein Name ist...".

But you can say it all 3 ways.

I wish I were fluent in German; I just began learning the language. It's easy to read and comprehend, but speaking and writing is hard. Integrating colloquial aspects is the most difficult part though, so is the vocabulary due to some false cognates.

I took two years of Latin and three years of Spanish in high school, don't remember a thing. In retrospect, I wish I took those courses more seriously.
