Was going to put this in the "Bumper stickers" thread but thought it would go better here.

...when you see this modern parent approach to getting your children to help with chores around the house and say, "If today's kids had my mom as a mother, they would most certainly be doing household chores for free with a smile because they were lucky to be alive, didn't want their asses sore, and wanted to eat their next meal with the family."

ps Thanks Mom!

I'm pretty lucky in that regard. My wife and I raised our kids like my mom raised me in that household chores were part of being part of the family. We gave them allowances, but it wasn't tied to a chore. My kids raised their kids the same way. Now we have 6 grand kids, all of whom help around the house and actually have manners. When these grand kids come visit, they put their stuff in the corner so it's not in the way of walking, clear the table after dinner, etc. I'm hoping these grand kids raise their kids the same way.

^ When I was a kid we didn’t get an allowance. There was no money for that. But I made sure my kids did, they worked for it and were happy to get it.

When I was a kid in elementary school, I felt lucky that my parents unlocked the door after making me shovel four feet of snow out of the driveway.....

When I was in grade school, dad paid me 25 cents a week for mowing
the lawns, emptying the trash and washing the evening dishes. One day
I spotted a little nitro model engine at our local hobby shop. It was $8.00.
I talked to dad about it and he made me a deal: I buy the engine and he’d
buy and build the free flight airplane the engine mount on.

Well, it took me 8 months to save up for the engine. I kept my precious
quarters in a B of A drawstring bag. Every Saturday, after I got paid, I’d
dump my collection on the living room floor and do an inventory.

I still have that little engine and its still in good shape. 67 years ago.

Did a swallow test today. Started with a barium liquid, moved on to applesauce with some barium whipped cream on it, then fruit salad with the whipped cream, and then graham crackers with the same cream. Watching the process of swallowing on the scope was fascinating.

End result, a couple of minor issues both likely caused by aging. They're bringing me back to show me some exercises that are meant to strengthen my throat muscles. I'm just glad there was nothing more serious found. I guess you could say you know you're old when you start having issues swallowing.

Had to go to the dentist this morning to repair a broken tooth. Actually the repair was on two teeth.

I've been chewing sugar free gum since I quit smoking almost 30 years ago and the dentist said move to sugar free lozenges instead, easier on the teeth. So I stopped on the way home and bought some sugar free Icebreakers. Not bad.

Can anybody here recommend any other sugar free lozenges that they like?

My dad had a chronic cough in his later years and they were convinced he was choking. Sometimes he would get to coughing and couldn’t stop. You’ve probably had that happen where you get a tickle that just won’t clear up. Occasionally it would get scary and his eyes would water and he would have an hard time catching his breath. I used to worry he’d have an episode and end up having an heart attack. Thankfully that never happened. Anyway, all told I think he had five swallow tests and passed them all with flying colors. I got to watch the last one and it is indeed very interesting to see the swallowing process. I was always super thankful his swallowing wasn’t the issue. An ENT finally figured he either had a very mild post nasal drip or some “silent” gerd. I think I may one day have the same issue, because I have always had a pretty good amount of phlegm and I clear my throat frequently and my dad did the same thing.
