In Virginia it's legal to text while driving if you are stopped at a red light. Should the light turn green and you're still stopped and texting, you're technically breaking the law at that point.

Haha, actually, all four lanes are completely closed off, just a few meters ahead. Naturally the the left. is always the one that stops first. I leave space in front of me, too many times while putting their cars to park (on a freeway, yes) I've seen minivanners hit reverse.

I do miss driving anywhere else but here.

I can promise you that, sadly not proudly, that you should be thankful for the traffic you have in WA state because the traffic in Washington, D.C. metro is almost guaranteed to be worse if one is outside the city itself.

In D.C. proper, there's very rarely bad traffic one must deal with provided one isn't trying to exit or enter the city. One almost has to be directly involved in whatever is holding up traffic to experience traffic jams in the city. In my observation, what holds up traffic in D.C. is drivers from outside of D.C. LOL

Unless you actually know your way through/around the city, I doubt your visit will make my point clear to you.

Just so you understand what i meant, however, take a look at a map of downtown D.C., say in the area around the White House and 12th to 16th Streets, NW. When I lived in Dupont Circle, I would land at National Airport, have no choice but to take the 14th Street Bridge into the city and have to at least for a bit, be caught in the 14th St. traffic during business hours. But as soon as I could, I'd cross over to either 15th, 13th, or 11th Street to continue my trip north. There's little to no traffic on those streets and

• 15th happens to be four lanes wide and one way with timed lights (~27mph) from I Street to Meridian Hill Park, so as long as one drives at the "light speed," one won't stop until 15th Street ends.
• 13th and 11th Streets don't continue straight through the city to the MD line, so commuters don't use it. One'll stop at lights here and there on either street, but one won't be in a traffic jam at all. The lights on these streets weren't timed as were the ones on 15th. (Maybe that's changed now???)
• 395/14th Street is often a "mess." It's one of the few routes out of D.C. into VA and all sorts of folks -- locals, tourists, official convoys, trucks, delivery vans, etc. -- use it at all times of the day. If one is on 14th St. downtown, one is likely to get stuck in a "backup" somewhere on it.

The short is that if one is just going from point to point -- like from one's home to one's office, or one's home to someplace -- most of the time, one doesn't have to deal with bad traffic. The two exceptions are Capitol Hill where Congress closed whole streets, and the commercial district just north and west of the White House (lobbyists, lawyers, doctors, GW University/Hospital, retail, etc.) which is just very congested during the business day, but quite reasonable after that, and a veritable ghost town on weekends, but for the areas immediately around bars frequented at night by young people. Generally speaking, however, one doesn't have to often go through those areas, and one certainly doesn't have to drive to them.

From the map below, you can see why going to/from D.C. and VA is such a disaster....there just aren't that many routes into and out of D.C. from VA, and "everybody" has to use one of them or go a long way out of their way. (bearing in mind that in D.C. terms, 10 miles is "a long way")

Well, traffic will be better in August than in any other month. "Everyone" is pretty much gone in August.

When I was growing up, my folks would say, "Anyone in D.C. in August has nowhere else to go." Even now in their twilight years (88 & 97), they go to the Cape in August. For those of us how live in D.C., it's just not fun in August -- hot, muggy, touristy, no "important" social events, etc. Why stay in town? It's kind of a shame though, because the "political crowd" is mostly gone in August, so the town has the potential to be rather pleasant for us natives. Alas, the weather drives the locals to the shores or the mountains or both or some place else. Head to Rehoboth, Virginia or Dewy Beach in August and there you'll find the traffic jams, on the way there, while you are there, and on the way back. LOL

Word to the wise if you're visiting in August: plan on a rain/thunder shower in the mid to late afternoon everyday. It may not happen everyday, but you need to be prepared. Mostly, "planning" (for tourists) means wear lots of linen because it's cool, it drys quickly and looks casually "smart" as/when it does, wear shoes that are comfortable when your feet are wet, and have a small towel to dry them when the rain stops. The last suggestion is good also for when one is in Southern Asia during monsoon season: wear sandals.

First of all, you're more useful as a guide than all the rest of the people around. Sure, for locals usually these seem normal things, but I'm a little further away than Seattle.

I don't like touristy shit, so your words actually convinced me to visit when I was planning to.
