Your boy might have some early signs of road rage. Look into that before it's too late.

I still can't wrap my head around this change of policy... but then again, I'm officially an old Soldier now.

When we had to go through all of this updated policy briefings and awareness training, all I can think about is "as a leader, IDGAF what your sexual preference is, just get the job done". Once cannot be victimized for their sexual orientation, if they just keep that info to themselves, when they SHOULDN'T be broadcasting that info anyway, in a professional setting.

That stuff just doesn't matter. I don't care what you do in your down time as long as you're not hurting yourself or others. When it's time to go to work, leave that stuff at home and focus on the mission.

So ... it sounds like you support the current policy then? "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" prohibited the military from asking about sexual orientation, but also prohibited servicemen and servicewomen from revealing their sexual orientation. DADT was repealed in 2011, so servicemen and women are now allowed to reveal their sexual orientation if they so desire without fear of discharge. I believe that sexual orientation was also added to the military Equal Opportunity list so as to not to serve as a basis for the exclusion in the military. Hence, per my understanding how things stand today, it seems that it is not inconsistent with your position as well.

You are correct.

The DADT was in full effect when I enlisted years ago. When the DADT policy was being revised, I felt that the amount of attention this subject got was just unnecessary, and the focus on it was irritating to me only because I was getting ready for my brief assignment as a recruiter.

When I was serving as a recruiter, I can say that not one of my applicants' sexual preference was a concern to me. as long as they met the requirements, achieved the qualifications, and ultimately showed a genuine interest in serving, I will put them in boots. Their sexual preference was irrelevant IMHO.

So when the DADT policy was being scrutinized, I couldn't understand why it was such a big deal. As long as the service member was dedicated to the success of their unit and it's mission, who cares what their preference is? Affording the opportunity to Superiors, peers and subordinates alike to start questioning individuals on their sexual orientation in the workplace will only lead to problems surrounded by prejudice, ignorance and generalizations.

So I say, don't ask, because it just doesn't matter. As long as it doesn't effect the mission or the team, then those personal preferences should be kept out of the professional environment, ESPECIALLY when the professional focus and importance of success can influence the outcome of life or death situations.
