The irony of the GRMN Supra using the S58. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing Masters of Nurburgring, and incidentally the acronym also seems to be an abbreviation of the word German.

BMW’s ZF 8 speed performs seemingly identical to the DCT we find in the current F8x and M2. I don’t really see the DCT option as being much of an upgrade. Frustratingly, I haven’t really seen anyone from the enthusiast crowd demanding a DCT in the new Supra anyways, so I’m not sure why the effort was made to make something available that no one seems to have asked for. In fact, it’s kind of the opposite. Are they trying to impress on paper?

Also, at around 100k, that’s a tough sell.

Toyota's decision here truly baffles me. It's one thing to use another company's motor and platform, but to launch a performance line with another company's motor and platform is ridiculous and makes them look like a joke. Just like TRD, no one will take GRMN seriously if they use another company's motor
It could be as simple as Toyota seeing an opportunity to increase revenue. 💡 Both brands, and the marketplace benefits. Win-win!

somebody should remind me that the same BMW was producing V10 engines only for sporty version of their saloon car back in the days.. feels like a century before..
Right? That V10 was the epitome of reliability and cheap maintenance.

A Manual Toyota Supra Is Coming

https://carbuzz.com/news/a-manual-to...upra-is-coming

Quote:
The sports coupe is about to get even more fun to drive.

If there's one change that enthusiasts would make to the Toyota GR Supra range, it'd likely be to add a manual gearbox option. It's not that the eight-speed automatic is bad - far from it, in fact - but a stick shift would go some way to making this sharp coupe even better to drive.

Back at the start of the year, Toyota admitted it had tested manual versions of the Supra but there was no official word on it going into production. Well, it appears that the conversation has gained some momentum based on a report by the Japanese publication Mag X.

According to the magazine, a manual gearbox is "under preparation" for the Supra, which is the clearest sign yet that fans will soon be able to row their own gears. The news comes after several additions and improvements to the Supra range since it was launched, such as the addition of a four-cylinder base model and a more powerful six-pot engine.

Toyota clearly doesn't want the range to stagnate, and we can't think of anything that would prevent that more than the introduction of a manual. We already had our first taste of what a manual Supra would be like, but we expect a properly sorted 'box from the manufacturer to be even better.

At this point, we don't have specifics on the manual gearbox or how acceleration will be affected, but few enthusiasts are likely to be bothered if it's a few tenths off the pace of the automatic.

Along with a manual Supra, a high-performance GRMN variant with over 500 horsepower is also expected. It should make use of the upcoming BMW M3's turbo-six engine. This will take the Supra's performance into another league altogether and, between these two new additions, the Supra will soon be knocking even more loudly on the door of the Porsche 718 Cayman.

It seems like Toyota is pretty committed to the Supra as they have made more changes in a few years of Supra than 8 years of the 86/BRZ.

As a previous 6MT RX-8, 350Z, and FRS owner, a 6MT will be the only way I’ll be a Supra owner.

I don’t quite understand why they would put a M-DCT in the limited edition Supra. The next generation M3/M4 is using the ZF 8 speed so will BMW continue production of a DCT simply for a Toyota? Someone explain this to me.

Had a bit of time today and passed a Toyota dealer here in town that has had a 2020 on the lot forever. The price is really good too, they want $47k for it. Having only seen ONE of these on the road in all this time, I just had to know how the thing drove so I stopped in for a test spin.

I really had no desire to buy the car (unless it somehow just blew me away) so I didn't waste much of the salesman's time, just took it for a quick drive. I'm 6'4 and 235, and was instantly turned off by how little vision there is in the car. You feel like the roof is collapsing in on you, and yes I had the seat all the way down.Your vision is so obstructed, it's like being in a pillbox or something. To your left and straight head it feels like you lose 20% of what you'd see in a normal car, I couldn't believe how obstructive it was. The blinds spots were EPIC, I don't think I've ever been in a worse car regarding vision out of the thing.

Needless to say I drove it about 3 miles total, a complete disappointment and with the vision as terrible as it was I didn't even get to test out the performance much. It felt like I was staring at the ceiling and upper door frame more than the road.

With that being said, it felt like a very solidly built car and is actually pretty attractive in person I must say. If you're a younger person with a nice job and a bit of money to throw around, I think it's a great choice especially at that price point. You just need to be smaller in stature, I can't imagine anybody over 6 foot would ever find that car comfortable. Compared to my MKIV back in the day, that thing was awesome in regards to room/space.

That's exactly how I felt when I visited the showroom and I'm 5' 10"!
My E92 feels as airy as an E30 in comparison.

Supra GRMN: Limited to 200 units, 520ps Monster FR of 12 million yen class!

Quote:
Supra has recovered for the first time in 17 years in May 2019. Of course, it is expected that the GRMN model will be set up, but in the spring of 2020, the 3L, straight 6 turbo car drastically improved its power, and on the contrary, its existence was questioned.

However, Supra GRMN will definitely appear. Of course the base is the straight 6, 3L turbo model.

The maximum output is 520ps and the maximum torque is also increased to about 62kg. The transmission is planned to be combined with the 7-speed DCT used by BMW's current M2 and M4.

Supra GRMN, which is expected to appear at a price of 12 million yen in 2023. There is a story that it is limited to 200 units, so if you want it, let's save money now.

I'd totally get this over a Cayman S or M2. They just need to give it a manual transmission!

I'm still working out what my next vehicle is going to be but right now it's between an M340i, or a Supra + beater.

The Supra has flaws, but it’s honestly still one of the better sports cars you can buy today. A MT option would make it killer. I’m guessing the MT likely comes on the 4 cyl though. But, if they give the 4 cyl a limited slip diff with the manual, that’s actually a pretty awesome combo.
