Many colleges giving free tuition??? Any Truth to this???

Apparently a person's daughter in my community is getting free tuition for college. She is going to Wharton Business school at UPENN, apparently UPENN and many other well know schools are giving out free tuition to students who are accepted and their family meets a certain financial requirements. I know for a fact this has happened to her, but was this lucky? lol is it really true that some very well known colleges are giving out free tuition?

Ive got a sophomore in high school right now, i told him that if this is true and if he gets free tuition to a good well known college, he can have my e90 328i. Im buying myself a 5 or A6 and a X5 for the wife immediately after he gets accepted.

If this is true, then that saves me a lot of money....that i will spend on updating my cars. now if only my son can make it into a top college thats offering this....

harvard I think started this trend. If your family makes less than 150k a year u r considered poor. You pay less to go to Harvard then a state college...

Gotta do research UPENN I am assuming is a state school. If so even though it may be a good school, if it is a state school then yea it is highly believable to get free tuiton.

My buddy is Going to UCF(University of Central Florida) he has everything payed for and even gets a check from them occasionaly.

Now private universities will give you some free cash(since the government basically pays them too) but mainly at private and high end schools you gotta get the grants and such yourself. Not that hard if you have good grades and such.

If your kid gets free tuition to a good college, I would bet he is smart enough to realize he is saving you an E90 every semester. So would probably expect more than yours. haha kidding.

Somehow I don't think the intent of these programs was to allow middle class parents to send their kids to school for free so that they can upgrade their cars.

Harvard started it to seem different and break from their standards. Also no doubt the government gives them money. I doubt tehy started it since it is something that is finally being really pushed by them.

Also keep in mind it is still difficult to get in.

AFAIK Wharton is one of the top B-schools in the US, regardless of whether UPENN is a state school (I have no clue)

Well he stated Wharton business school at UPENN. What does that mean is it part of UPENN a subsidary? If so it is a state school so to speak.

I mean nothing against state schools im not saying anything just stating why she might be getting free tuiton.

I think it's private but might get money from the government. Is there any ivy league school that's public? The answer is no, of course then it wouldn't be a big deal. The problem is getting in. Do you know how hard it is to get into the wharton school of business?

There is Upenn(Ivy League school) and Penn State(not a tier 1 school) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Pennsylvania

I see, I just read up on the school and the whole Ivy League stuff. As stated she probably did really well and figured things out.

Also you would be surprised how many people use their money or friends or position in society to get free stuff like that.

It may not make sense, considering people with cash wouldnt need it. But then again why not take something free? plus the rich get richer for a reason.

UPenn is an Ivy League school, as stated. As with all Ivy's, and speaking from experience, you have to either do really well in school or be qualified for Financial Aid. Harvard is the most generous when it comes to these things.

Receiving full tuition is rare but it does happen if you are financially in need. These could be full tuitions or a portion of what you need, but the possibility of receiving full tuition is more possible if the case is financial aid.

Merit scholarships are harder to come by and extremely difficult to receive and are very rarely full scholarships. They'll give you a portion of what you need. Hope this helps!

If you have any college admissions questions or financial aid questions you can PM me.

U Penn is an Ivy. Most definitely not a state school.

if u seriously have finincal problems and ur smart, yeah u can go to college for free. colleges always give out money because the fact that after you graduated, you will prolly donate some of ur money back to the school etc...

btw i got like 20k from penn state, paid only 3k for a school year.

yep. i'm transferring to Columbia next spring and they will pay for up to 50% of your tuition incl. room and board if they are school owned properties. which is nice considering the estimated cost is $52,800 a year with room and board.

Yes, a lot of the elite private schools with overflowing endowments are changing their tuition based on fmaily income.

I think you have to be pretty dirt poor to send your kid to Harvard/Princeton/Upenn and get free tuition.

Most posters on this board will likely not qualify. A median fmaily in the USA makes ~40K , the cost of our cars...

doubt they will cover your entire school expense unless 1) your really poor 2) your kid is Einstein.

might want to consider applying to other out of school scholarships if you really dont want to pay for college tuition. not sure what state scholarships PA has but some states will give a few hundred to a few thousand to students that apply. for example california has a "CAL GRANT" which is aid to anybody who has good grades and writes some essay. special school programs such as honor societies might also give you opportunities to get scholarships.

UPENN is privy & ivy... est 40k a year? i have a sibling at an okay college in the east and i think its around 40k a year as well... 35k after scholarship.

oh i think you get a few thousand if you get top 5% of the PSAT's as well or something.

It's a bit more selective than that. Top x% to qualify as merit, then essay and app. + top x% of the x% to be a semifinalist, then some of those get money.

The military is a great way to afford college. Two things #1 you have to be willing to go to war...that is the military's #1 priority right now #2 find the job with the biggest bonus. I know a cook who got a $20,000 bonus for 2 years and 18 weeks of service. By doing 2 years he got VA benefits to buy a house $0 down, used his GI Bill to pay for college, and got two roomates to cover his morgage. He also did free courses while he was in and earned an associates degree.
