Wearing suit for the first time, need help is this too loose?

So I need to go to this wedding, I need to wear "cocktail attire". I've never worn a suit before, I bought this but I'm not sure if its too loose on me. The shoulder definitely has some gap and I can't tell if this is too loose or not, please let me know what you think.

In one of the pics I have shown how much gap there is in the shoulder I am able to "pinch" the shoulder of the coat that is all gap.

Also let me know if you think the pants break too short, they stop just short of my shoelaces.

Problem is I am going through weight loss now so my body shape is changing rapidly, I don't want to spend on a custom tailored suit just for this wedding . This is a size 38 jacket, if I go size 36 then the shoulder seems perfect but its way too tight around the belly (stretches very badly whenI try to button it).

Is it acceptable to not wear a suit in "cocktail attire"? Would I be better off wearing this than not wear a suit at all?
Or should I get size 36 and not button it?

Thanks, I'm thinking no tie actually.

But I'm more concerned about the jacket and the pants . What do you think of those?

I think the suit will look better without that tie. I can't tell about the fit from these pics.

Jacket is fine. Get a new tie and get your pants hemmed. They shouldn't be bunched up like that at the bottom.

1st: Jacket needs to fit and not pull at the button when you put it on. Also, no pulling at the shoulder. Get the 38 and have it adjusted.

2nd: That tie is totally wrong. It's too wide. Pick a tie that roughly matches the width of the lapel of the jacket. If the question is THAT TIE OR NO TIE, then skip the tie. Otherwise, don't be a scrub, get a proper tie.

3rd: Pants needs to be hemmed. Make sure they don't pull at your crotch when you take a step.

Get a narrower tie. That one is too wide.

looks decent but pants definitely need to be hemmed. jacket might need adjusting.

best thing to do is:

1. go to a tailor for precise adjustment. we can only tell so much from pictures.
2. create a bonfire. throw the tie in there.

4th: is the suit navy? if yes, you need brown shoes and belt. cole haan is having a sale and the british tan shoe/belt would be a good addition.

5th: some colorful/popping socks will make the outfit if you are taking out the break in the pants.

but ultimately, do what makes you feel comfortable! you are the one wearing it.

I doubt anyone is going to care what you are wearing unless you go in jeans and sneakers. Everyone will be paying attention to the bride and groom anyway.

Nah, must be either a Black shoe, or a Dark Brown. Matching belt. I suppose if you can pull off medium brown or tan, more power to you, but I wouldn't recommend it in a million years.

the pats fits fine in the legs but are definitely too long, needs to be hemmed.
depending on what kind of guest you may be able to do a thom Browne look with cropped pants showing off your socks

the jacket does not work, too wide in the shoulders and too loose in the sleeves.
I would look for a better jacket, as tailoring a jacket from the shoulders is going to be very expensive and not a lot of tailors are able to do it.
better to look for a 36 jacket with a boxy cut and have it slimmed in at the waist.

the tie is VERY UGLY, you can wear a tie but do a slimmer one in either a solid red, silver or with a faint stripe.

whatever you do please make sure your tie is 100% Silk and NOT POLYESTER, and since its a wedding you can get a pocket square, preferably sold white as you are not yet used to formal attire and don't want to dress in a way that makes you uncomfortable.

you can wear black shoes, the one you have seem fine, just make sure its clean

Great feedback here. I would also suggest that the sleeves are about 1/2" too short.

Kill the tie with fire, otherwise okay.

Something I have learned about nice suits over the years, is that unless you're willing to ensure the entire suit is fitted, don't bother fixing 1 small thing. If you have a nicely fitted jacket and the pants are all saggy, you'll look just as "off" as if you had just a standard cut jacket on, and also the other way around.

If you don't have time to get your Jacket fitted, get those pants hemmed, and carry your jacket in.

Also my old boss used to cut our ties off with a pair of scissors if it wasn't tied properly, and if it wasn't tight, or wasn't "top button". As for your suit, if you don't care THAT much, it's not perfect but looks just fine. Go have an amazing time man!

Never ever ever ever wear black shoes with a navy suit. A major peeve of mine. I went peanut butter brown shoes now (maybe more or a chestnut?) and get compliments regularly.

I actually think the sleeves are fine, just enough shirt showing. Some sharp looking cuff links would be nice, but okay without. White pocket square would be a nice touch especially if you're going to go no tie.

Matching brown belt and shoes go well with a navy suit and white shirt. Pants are too long and need to be hemmed. Go to a good tailor and ask him to fix the jacket if you want a more hourglass look.

I know you're early in your suit game, but a splash of colour in your shirt, tie or pocket square can make the difference in looking traditional or modern.
