Apple reportedly in discussions to buy sports car manufacturer McLaren

"Yes, Siri, please pass that shitty Prius in the left lane for me!"

Zero chance this happens in my opinion. Apple already has a ton of haters and if they buy McLaren and attach their name to a car that only the one percenters can afford they would get lynched from a PR perspective.

The other alternative is the dumb down McLaren price, make them available for entry level buyers...Either way, would kill the McLaren name and I doubt they would agree to this.

And do we really need Apple to control more of the market? Apple should stick to consumer electronics but they fall under their own weight.

One could say the same thing about Tesla sticking to the car market, or Google sticking to search engines, or Amazon sticking to consumer internet sales, and so on. Thing is, it's not realistic because of the long-term goals of none of these companies is in only those realms. That includes Apple.

These are all technology companies: not consumer electronics companies, web sales companies, car companies, what have you. Technology is everywhere, and is increasingly applied everywhere. In that respect, Apple has every right and every reason to have an interest in McLaren --

-- which, fundamentally, is also a technology company that happens to specialize in a certain car segment. Gee: sound familiar? (Tesla).

Apple could very easily buy the company to leverage its tech and future tech (as well as its intellectual talent) but allow it to maintain its current spot in the marketplace. Isn't that basically what, say, Fiat does with Ferrari? Facebook does with Instagram? Alphabet/Google does with YouTube?

Which means almost nothing. If the acquiring party said something, then it might be of value.

"One percenters" can not afford a McLaren.

LOL. Sure.

It will happen, whether it's McLaren or one of the other two manufacturers they're talking to.

It actually makes sense. Mclaren provides ECU's for all the f1 teams and I think a few other series as well. That's what Apple wants, not the supercars or the F1 team, they want the technical know how from the best ECU engineers in the world.

If Apple does end up buying McLaren, it'd be interesting to see them do a pitstop without a jack.
